Session export: An Evening Among Friends

“Jax, Shadow has invited us over to their place for dinner. I want to go, but I want to dress up a little, instead of wearing my everyday clothes.”

“You look beautiful in anything, Ras, but wear what you’d like, and I guess that means you want me looking nice too, hm?”

“Yes, please. Besides, it’s the first time you’ll be meeting them, so it’ll help with a good impression.”

“Alright, dear, I’ll see what I have and do the best I can. I’m an old pirate; we didn’t have much cause for fancy clothes.”

“You’re not old, love.”

“Right, okay, I suppose we’re getting dressed now?”

“I am, yes.”

She walked into the bedroom and went over to her closet. She stripped out of her clothes and started to reach for a shirt when Jaxyn slipped up behind her and wrapped his arms around her, and kissed her neck.

“You are so beautiful.”

She leaned back against his chest, smiling warmly up at him. “Thank you. You’re pretty good-looking yourself. Now, come on, let’s get dressed.”

He kissed her again and then let go of her. “Alright.”

She chuckled, then turned her attention back to her closet. She pulled out a grey shirt and slipped it on. It was silky and had mid-length flared sleeves. It also had a sash to tie around the waist. Then she pulled on a pair of loose black pants and her most comfortable pair of boots.

While she was dressing, Jaxyn was going through his own clothing to pick out his best shirt, a light blue button-down, and a loose-fitting pair of black pants and boots. He glanced over to her and smiled when he saw her outfit. “That looks great on you.”

“Thanks, you look very handsome too.”

“Should I put my hair up or leave it down?”

She walked over and wrapped her arms around his waist and leaned up to kiss him. “Leave it down, it looks good that way. I think I’m leaving mine down too, for a change.”

He hugged her back and smiled, reaching up to run his fingers through her hair. “Yeah, yours looks great down too.”

“Thank you.” She reached up to cup his cheek. “I love you.”

“I love you too.”

“Shall we go then?” “Sure, will you actually let me fly this time?”

“We’ll see, flyboy. Let’s go.”

They headed for the Caliburnus, leaving the droids behind for the evening since they wouldn’t be needed. Once on board, she smiled at him and motioned to the pilot’s seat.

“I’ll put in the coordinates and play co-pilot this time. But don’t you dare scratch my ship.”

“Wouldn’t dream of it, beautiful.”

He went through a standard preflight check just to prove that he was being careful with her ship. Then Jaxyn started the engines and took the Caliburnus skyward.

It was a relatively short flight across the continents to Shadow and Sanguis’ estate. Jaxyn carefully landed next to their ship and powered down the engines.

She rose to her feet first and leaned over the seat to hug him. “Good job. Maybe I’ll let you fly her more often.”

“Really? I look forward to that.” He flashed her a cheeky grin and kissed her forearm where she hugged him.

She stepped back and he rose to join her, and they headed out of the ship, choosing to leave the ramp open since they were among friends. As they approached the manor, she grinned to see the three boys racing toward her already with Shadow and Sanguis following behind.

“Auntie, I mean, Aunt Ras!” Deus exclaimed as he ran ahead of the pack, his grey eyes alit with a jovial glow. “Is that our new uncle?”

“Deus, mind your manners,” Sanguis immediately corrected firmly. “Introductions first.”

“Fine, fine.” Deus quickly cleared his throat, remembering his stepfather’s brief meeting with him and his brothers after they had found out about the visit. “Hi, I’m Deus, er, Deus Tarsus.”

He gestured towards his twin now joining his side, the white-haired boy politely bowing his head in greeting. “I’m Artorias Tarsus. It’s a pleasure to meet you.”

“I Sorin!” the youngest proclaimed, his bright crimson eyes full of delight. He went right up to his aunt, manners be damned for the three-year-old. “Auntie! Up, up!”

“Sorin…”

“Sanguis, let him be. They’re family. Not members of the House on business,” Shadow gently reminded her husband. “There will be a time to practice formality.”

Sanguis sighed, knowing there was no point in arguing when she was right. “Alright, I’ll lay off.”

He offered Ras and her companion a smile and curt nod. “Ras, as always, it’s good to see you again. And you must be Jaxyn,” he remarked as he offered his hand. “Sanguis Caldiren, and this is my wife, Shadow.”

“It’s good to meet you,” Shadow added with a friendlier smile. “Welcome to our home. Any friend of Ras’ is a friend of ours.”

Rasilvenaira grinned brightly at the boys and happily grabbed little Sorin and lifted him up, and settled him on one hip. “Hello, my dear.”

He held up his little hands, and she happily shook the sleeve on her left arm up and let him grab her forearm. He chomped down and made happy sounds as he chewed on her. She glanced over at Jax’s surprised expression.

“It’s fine, dear. His little fangies aren’t sharp enough yet to hurt.” Then she looked over at the twins. “Hello, you two. I swear you’re all growing like weeds. Gonna be all grown up before I know it.”

Jaxyn shook his head at her. Only she would do that. But that was part of what made him love her so much. He looked over at Sanguis when he spoke, and happily took the offered hand.

“Yes, you can just call me Jax if you prefer. It’s a pleasure to meet you both. I’ve heard a lot about all of you. It’s nice to put faces to names now.”

“Shadow, Sanguis, always good to see you both as well.” Ras offered them both a warm smile, then leaned in to gently place a kiss on Sorin’s head. “Such a sweetheart. You’re growing fast, too.”

Sorin’s grey cheeks turned a soft red from the compliment, though his focus remained on his Aunt’s arm, much to Sanguis’ silent exasperation. However, his eyes drifted towards the newcomer, and the young Nagai-hybrid’s fascination shifted. “Fwend?”

“That’s our new uncle,” Deus pointed out presumptuously. “Like Uncle Reiden.”

“Deus.” Sanguis’ low, warning tone drew an irritated sigh from the boy, but the Nagai assured him he wasn’t upset as he placed his hand on Deus’ shoulder. “We’ve only just met him. Don’t be quick to assume such a title yet, hm?”

“Alright, alright.” Deus looked up at Jaxyn. “Sooo are you and my Aunt married?”

This time, only a sharp sigh of defeat escaped Sanguis while Shadow only chuckled beside him. “Deus, honey, let’s all go inside and let these two settle in the library before we ask any more questions, alright? Why don’t you and your brother check with Mr. Mason to see if the refreshments are ready?”

“Okay, Mom. Come on, Arty. I’ll race ya! See ya again in a bit, Mr. Jax!”

The two boys took off, though Artorias lagged as he snuck in a quick bow to Jaxyn before tailing his brother. Shadow only smiled, amused and touched as always by her sons’ antics. Her attention returned to their guests as she gestured for them to head inside. “Come. Mr. Mason should have some wine and snacks for us in the library shortly. We’re all excited to get to know you, Jax.”

Sanguis, as the proper host he always strived to be, led them all inside and guided them to the library. Mr. Mason was already there, setting the two trays down on the coffee table situated between two couches, Artorias helping the butler set the small plates, while Deus begged for the man to let him try a sip of wine to no avail. His efforts ended at the sight of Sanguis, and he immediately stepped away from the desired wine bottle and grinned.

“Ah, Lord Caldiren, everything is in order.” Mr. Mason offered a polite smile to Ras and Jax. “Lady StormRaven, a pleasure to see you as always. And you must be Mr. Rax. It’s a pleasure to meet you, good sir.”

Rasilvenaira chuckled at Deus’ question, casting a sideways glance at Jaxyn. He smiled back at her. Then he nodded to Sorin, “Yes, I’m a friend.”

When Shadow suggested they head inside, she nodded and turned to follow Sanguis, though she already knew the way. Jaxyn stayed close, amazed at how graceful she was, even with a three-year-old chewing on one forearm. Aside from his one question, Sorin was contentedly nomming on his Aunt, still making happy sounds.

Once they reached the library, Jaxyn nodded to the man. “I am, though you could just call me Jax, I don’t mind.” He glanced over to Rasilvenaira to see where she was going to sit. She settled on one of the sofas, and he settled beside her.

“It’s a pleasure to meet you as well,” he offered.

He looked over at Ras, then smiled, “Think he’d let me hold him?”

“As long as you don’t mind if he chews on you, I’m sure he wouldn’t mind,” she slowly pulled her arm away from the little fanged mouth. “Sorin, sweetie. Would you like to go sit with Uncle Jax?”

Sorin’s eyes widened, excitement brewing within his heart. “Yes! Up, up Uncle Jax!”

Shadow didn’t need to see the look of concern on Sanguis’ face. She placed her hand over his on his knee, giving it a reassuring squeeze to just let Sorin be as he prepared to nom on his newest victim’s arm. In time, they would have to put an end to the habit, but for now, Shadow was willing to let her son have his way.

Meanwhile, from where he now sat, Deus had a triumphant grin on his face. “See! He’s our Uncle now. Told you!”

“Deus, be quiet, will you?” Artorias urged. “You talk too much.”

“I do not! I’m just pointing out that I was right!” His gaze immediately met Sanguis’, the boy unflinching from whatever sharp reprimand was coming his way.

However, it never came as his stepfather smiled softly. “Alright, you were right. No need to shout, Deus. Your point has been made.”

The older twin wrinkled his nose, disappointed his challenge wasn’t met, though deep down, he was grateful for it. He turned his gaze back to Jax, questions flooding his mind. “So, Uncle Jax, what do you do? Are you a Sith like Aunt Ras? How did you two meet? Do you have a lot of animals too?”

As soon as Sorin showed that he wanted to be held by him, Jax happily took him from Ras. He heeded her warning, and sure enough, his left arm was grabbed by small hands, and he felt the prick of tiny fangs gnawing against his well-muscled forearm. He chuckled and looked over at Ras, smiling.

“I guess I don’t taste too bad.”

Ras smirked at him, “Haven’t I already told you that?”

Jax blushed at that, and turned his attention to Arty’s questions. “Well, I used to be a pirate, until I changed my ways to become a legitimate freighter. You’re Aunt and I met for the first time a long time ago on Tatooine when she commandeered my ship. But we went our separate ways for a while and just found each other again recently on Nar Shaddaa. And no, I don’t have any animals, though I suppose I might say I have one since one of the Voorpaks seems to have claimed me, but that’s all. No, I don’t have any Force abilities like she does.”

Ras arched a brow at him, “You have some Force talent since you inherited the Kiffar’s ability of psychometry.”

He shrugged, “That doesn’t really count, and I’m never sure how accurate anything I sense from it is.”

“You also have better instincts than most normal people, so I think there’s at least some latent abilities there.”

“Well, I don’t plan on counting on any Force stuff. I’ll trust my instincts and my blasters. And maybe you as long as you’re in a good mood.”

She rolled her eyes at him and shook her head. “Good thing I’ve been in a good mood then. Reminds me that I need to sharpen my daggers again when we get home.”

Her tone was light and teasing, not the usual ice-cold when she was usually threatening someone, so it was clear she was joking.

“Mhm, and what, you want some target practice? I don’t mind sparring with you, as long as you don’t complain if I win.”

She laughed, “Deal.”

Shadow couldn’t help but smile as she watched the exchange between the two. Aside from the part of Ras they saw when she was with the kids, this was another side of the fellow Sith that Shadow found herself appreciating. Ras looked genuinely happy and more light, though she would only voice her observation aloud, probably to Sanguis.

“So, a pirate, huh?” Shadow finally remarked. “My father was a smuggler himself. I remember going on a few runs with him when I was little. I’m sure you have plenty of amazing stories to share. It’s definitely an exciting life in more ways than one.”

“I bet you fought off a bunch of goons!” Deus quickly added. He briefly paused, a thought running through his mind as another question bloomed. “Did…you ever have any bounty hunters after you? Mandalorians?”

Next to him, Artorias just listened intently as he studied the half-Kiffar and tried to search him with the Force. Curiosity simmered within, but as always, he chose to observe, letting his brother’s questions draw out more information while he hunted silently for his own. A soft cough drew his attention to Sanguis, and he realized he had been staring perhaps a bit too much. He looked down for a moment, twiddling his thumbs while resuming his investigation with the Force.

Sanguis rubbed his stepson’s shoulder assuredly, his own mind flooded with questions of his own. Unlike Shadow, seeing Ras more open and filled with such mirth was startling. He was used to her snappy quips and ‘grumpy’ disposition, but then again, even his reserved, no-nonsense personality had been shattered by Shadow over time. He just wasn’t always so open in front of others, save for the few moments his wife forced him out of his shell.

Jaxyn glanced over at Shadow when she spoke. “Oh? Yeah, I did some smuggling along with the pirating. Exciting is one word for it, sure enough. I probably do have a lot of stories if I think about it long enough.”

He looked over at Deus and grinned. “I fought a good number of goons, yeah. Fought with my fair share of bounty hunters, but don’t recall running into any Mandalorians.”

“I did a good bit of pirating too, with and without him.” Ras looked over, her expression fond as she watched Jax with Sorin. She was proud of him for accepting the boy’s little quirk without complaining.

“Yeah, but I wouldn’t call you a pirate, not really.”

“Oh?” She looked at him, one brow arched sharply. “What would you call me then, hm?”

Jaxyn smiled. It was a loaded question, and he knew he had to be careful answering it. “I would call you dangerous and beautiful.”

She rolled her eyes, “Smooth talker.”

“All just part of my usual charm.”

“Mhmm. Charm is it?”

“You know you love me.” He smiled cutely and gently ruffled Sorin’s hair, reminding her that he held her nephew.

“You’re lucky I do, scoundrel.”

She shook her head at him, clearly amused but feigning irritation. She finally reached over for a glass of the wine that had been offered and took a sip.

“So have all of you been lately?”

Shadow shrugged. “We’ve been alright. I’ve just been home with the boys while Sanguis is busy with House work. Been training Stormveiðr with Tsume’s help. Eqkaesyr still hasn’t taken to him, but hopefully, in time, he will accept him. He hasn’t been around much since Loki’s passing.”

“Mom’s been helping me with Tracyn too,” Artorias added softly. “Though Tracyn got in trouble the other day. Deus accidentally left his sock drawer open, and well…Tracyn chewed all the socks.”

An amused smile crossed the half-Sephi’s lips, earning a scolding groan from his twin. Though he didn’t condone his pup’s behavior, it was still comical to hear Deus’ dramatic complaints about his ruined socks. “But I’m doing my best, Aunt Ras. Tracyn is going to become a great wolf one day. I promise.”

“Hey, Art? Didn’t you have something to give to your aunt?” Shadow asked thoughtfully.

“Oh, yeah. I’ll be right back.” Artorias slid off the couch and quickly rushed off. When he returned, he brought with him a piece of paper with a sketch of his Aunt with her Voorpaks. “I hope you like it, Aunt Ras. I worked really hard on it. It’s not the best, but I tried.”

He handed her the sketch before returning to his spot, watching her intently for any sign of disappointment. Sensing his worry, Shadow connected with him in the Force, giving him a sense of comfort before she spoke. “He spent two days on it. Wouldn’t quit until he felt it was perfect.”

Rasilveniara took the piece of paper and looked at the sketch. It was truly very good. She showed it to Jaxyn. “I love it, see how good it is?”

“Yeah, very good, looks just like you and your furballs.”

She rose to her feet and walked over to pull Arty into a warm, gentle hug. “You did very well, thank you. I’ll put it up on my wall when I get home.”

Then she stepped over and hugged Deus, too. “Be patient with Tracyn. He’s still young.”

Looking back to Arty, “You’re doing well with him, I know he’ll mature into a very well-behaved wolf.”

Jaxyn cleared his throat softly, and Ras turned back to him, then smiled. Sorin had nommed himself to sleep, hugging Jax’s strong arm. She carefully rolled the sketch and tucked it into a pocket, then walked over to him.

“Want me to take him?”

Jax shifted Sorin just enough so the boy’s head rested against his broad chest. “Nah, he’s fine. Let him sleep. I don’t mind.”

She nodded, then leaned over to kiss his cheek lightly, “You are good with them, I told you so.”

“Well, I’m glad. Just wasn’t sure, it’s been a long time since I’ve been around kids.”

She smiled and settled back on the sofa beside him and took another sip of her wine. “Sanguis, how’s it going being Quaestor? Settling into it, alright?”

Sanguis offered a wry smile. “It’s been something. There’s a lot of work to get the House into better shape, and I’m still having to earn everyone’s trust. However, overall, I’m doing alright. I enjoy having something to work on, and Reiden’s been helpful. We’re still exploring new parts of the ruins we’ve discovered buried underground, so that’s been exciting. Just hard to keep my wife away every time we find something new. The only thing I could do without is all the paperwork that comes flooding my way.”

The Nagai chuckled as he wrapped his arm around Shadow’s shoulder and pulled her against him. “However, this one has been helping me with that despite how I tell her to take it easy. She manages a lot already with the kids and the estate on top of managing the Wolf’s Den.”

“But Teyla helps me with that, so it’s fine,” Shadow added. “I understand how irritating paperwork can be. That’s the biggest thing I don’t miss from being Empress, but I still like to help Sanguis whenever I can. Especially if it means he can come home early.”

“And for those days, I am grateful,” Sanguis remarked. “Though the past few days, I’ve been spending a few nights at Havoc Base more than I care to, but such is the nature of being Quaestor, I guess. I hope things have been alright for you with Caliburnus, Ras.”

Ras chuckled and nodded. “Oh, stars, yes, the paperwork is a drag. But it’s better now than it used to be. Back when I was first Quaestor of Caliburnus, back in the Cocytus system, there wasn’t so much of the automation that we have today to take care of some of the tasks. I’m glad you’re settling in alright, and I can imagine it would be hard keeping Shadow from new discoveries.”

“Jax likes going with me when I’m headed back to the Garrison, to see where he can help out. It does make the tediousness of it a lot more bearable. Thankfully, I have a small army of droids that handle things at home, like doing the basic animal care while I’m not home. I spend half my days off just working to keep the bonds strong with all the critters, especially if I’m kept at the Garrison for longer stretches.”

Jaxyn nodded, “I might not be able to do much, but I want to help her where I can. I think it’s good that you have someone to share the work with. It’s why I’m hoping she’ll let me help her more and more. She just takes on so much on her own shoulders. Stubborn streak for miles.”

“Hmph, you think I’m stubborn? Do I really need to remind you of the Kamin raid?”

He stared at her for a moment, a slight frown pulling at his lips. “Don’t go dragging up ancient history. I’m not that bad.”

“Uh huh, alright, I’ll let it go. But I’m not that bad either. I’m just not used to having someone working with me like you do.”

“I suppose that’s fair, but I do worry about you overdoing it.”

“I won’t, don’t worry. I do still know my limits. As much as I hate to admit them.”

“Not surprising in the least,” Sanguis muttered teasingly, only to grunt in pain as his wife’s elbow collided with his ribs. “What? I’m just agreeing with her.”

“You’re one to talk. How many times have I had to get you to come to bed when I find you clearly struggling to plow through reports in the study?”

“Rowan, must I remind you of all the times I had to get you to rest when you were leading the Empire? There were so many nights you were working yourself to death.”

“Yes, well, hush.” Shadow quickly stuck out her tongue before she relented to the truth. “I probably would’ve had you never come into my life to speak sense into me. Well, unless you had killed me first.”

She looked at Jax. “Yes, my husband tried to kill me when we first met. Almost did, but he didn’t. I almost killed him, too. Now here we are happily married with all this. Funny how life works, sometimes.”

“Wait, Dad tried to kill you?” Deus asked with surprise. “You never told us this.”

Shadow and Sanguis exchanged looks, a silent understanding passing between them before Sanguis spoke. “Your mother and I…didn’t really know each other back then, Deus. Like your mother said, life is…funny. In the end, she won me over as did both of you, and I wouldn’t have it any other way. Even when your mother drives me crazy and tempts me sometimes.”

His tease earned him another elbow to the ribs, though the impact was more playful as Shadow rolled her eyes. “Only because I love you, you living fossil.”

A soft chuckle escaped Sanguis as he brushed her temple with a kiss, his guard lowering once more thanks to his wife. “And you love this fossil.”

His golden gaze returned to Jax and Ras. “Not sure how much Ras has told you, but I am a bit of a relic from an older time.”

Rasilvenaira glanced over at Jax and smiled, “Sounds familiar, doesn’t it.”

“Yeah, but only you threatened me; I never threatened you.”

“Yes, you did. After that fiasco, that was the Anara run. You were threatening all the crew, actually.”

Jax frowned, thinking for a moment. Then he sighed, “Did you have to remind me of that one? Surely, though, you knew I didn’t mean it. With you, on the other hand, I had no such assurances, my dear Assassin Queen.”

Ras rolled her eyes at him. “If I’d actually meant it, you wouldn’t still be here.”

“Fair point. I’m glad you didn’t kill me. Tell the truth now, it was my undeniable charm wasn’t it?”

She laughed softly, “Yeah… we can go with that.”

“Love you too, dear.”

“I know.”

Then Jax looked over at Sanguis. “She did fill me in on some of the key points about you both, yeah. Can’t imagine how it would be to sort of be out of your own time.”

He looked over at Ras, mischief burning in his light brown eyes.

“Say it and you’re walking home.”

“I didn’t say anything.”

“Good, keep it that way, scoundrel.”

He smirked, but remained silent.

Sanguis nodded, his mind traveling back to the past. “It was very disorienting waking up from centuries of being in cryostasis. Not to mention, it was a rude awakening, no thanks to some Jedi apprentices discovering my sanctuary on top of finding the remains of a dear friend who gave her life to keep me safe.”

He paused, reflecting on the Jedi who had found him and their ultimate end by his hand, along with the burial of Linette’s skeletal remnants. “Waking up to a new Empire that I saw as an affront to the Empire I once served had me reeling in bitterness. Only after meeting my wife did I come to realize I no longer missed the days of survival from the past. I miss the glory, sure, but I don’t miss the people who took so much from me. In the end…”

The Nagai met Shadow’s gaze, his own softening with pure gratitude and love. “…I was able to start anew with true freedom. Granted, I’m not entirely free of the past’s shackles, but I don’t have to deal with it alone. I’ve embraced it, but I do not let it control me.”

Shadow smiled, leaning in and planting a soft kiss on his cheek. “You’ve come a long way. We both have.”

She noted the exchange between Ras and Jax, her brow raised in curiosity. “What is this secret that the poor man must keep? You have me intrigued.”

Ras sighed softly, then looked over at Jax before turning her gaze back to Shadow. “He likes teasing me because I’m seven years older than he is. Which is exactly why I so rarely mention my age around others. Especially a cheeky scoundrel like this one.”

Jax chuckled, “It doesn’t matter a bit to me, but you’re so easy to tease.”

Sorin shifted in his sleep and hugged Jax’s arm tighter. Jax smiled. “He’s adorable.”

“Isn’t he? The twins were super cute at this age, too.”

“I bet they were. They’re still cute. But they’re starting to show how they’ll be when they mature.”

He sighed, “I spent most of my life on board a ship. I was born on one, and my parents were both killed on one. I had to stay planetside for a few years to save up enough credits for my own ship, but when I got one and a crew, I went after the pirates that killed my parents. Never really even considered the possibility of ever settling down until this one commandeered my ship and took over my life for a year. When she walked away without even a goodbye, I realized just how much she meant to me, so I spent twenty years looking for her.”

“And I spent those years trying to avoid him. Finally, I decided that I was done running from him, so I let him find me on Nar Shaddaa recently. No regrets other than the fact that I should have stopped running a long time ago.”

“Well, we’ve found each other again now, so a fresh start.”

“Aye, fresh start. It feels good.”

“Yes, it really does. And she hasn’t threatened me lately, so maybe she is finally warming up to me.”

“Maybe a little. As long as you behave.” She emptied her wine glass and set it aside. “You’re lucky you’re cute.”

Shadow felt her porcelain cheeks growing warm from the scene before her. Once again, the genuine love and peaceful content radiating from Ras was a precious thing to witness. The life she and the other assassin led was one tainted with death and the sacrificing of one’s soul, but knowing that the veteran had finally found something to rejuvenate the spirit with something more pure made the half-Sephi extremely happy. To her, Ras was long overdue for a blessing such as this, despite the irony of a Sith believing in such things.

Her thoughts were interrupted when Mr. Mason arrived. “Ah, I take it that the food is ready?”

“Indeed, my lady. The dining room is set, and the cooks have finished the last dish.”

“Perfect. Thank you, Mason.”

Both she and Sanguis stood up, Sanguis taking the lead once more. “Well, best to eat while the food is warm. I hope you like Nagaian food if you’ve ever had it. After living on Nagi for a while, Rowan insists it be on the menu most days. Right this way.”

Sanguis led the group to the dining room, the table already set with plates filled with food and platters filled with traditional rolls and finger foods to pick from. Gently reminding the twins of their table manners, he then stood at his spot waiting for everyone to take a seat before he did.

Shadow, meanwhile, came to Jax’s rescue, taking Sorin from him before disappearing to take the sleeping child to his room to rest. While they waited for her to return, Deus took the opportunity to ask more questions. As expected, Artorias just watched and listened.

“So, Uncle Jax, what’s the most dangerous mission…er…run you’ve ever had as a pirate?”

Jax chuckled and rubbed his stubbled chin, “Well, that would have to be the one your Aunt brought up earlier, the Kamin run. We got intel on a ship running without an escort and loaded with high end goods. Ras said she didn’t trust the intel, but I assured her my source was good. So we went after the ship. It turned out that it was a trap set for pirates. The ship was loaded with mercs and they let us move far enough into the ship that they could cut off our escape route and surrounded us. It was a very hard fight, and I lost half my crew that day.”

He looked over at Ras who arched her eyebrow at him. He continued, “She was right, and I should have listened to her intuition. But man, you should have seen your Aunt. She was quite a vision when she was fighting. She’s little but she’s ferocious when it’s a matter of survival. Her daggers didn’t stop until she’d cleared our escape route and we bolted back onto our ship and disconnected the airlocks and I got us out of there as fast as the Red Dawn could fly.”

“It was a sad day for the Red Dawn,” Ras added. “But we gradually recovered. Mind you, this was before I realized I had the Force, so I was just doing my best without it using my trusty knives.”

“It was quite a surprise for me when I found her on Nar Shaddaa and saw her wearing lightsabers. We’ve had a lot of catching up to do.”

Ras nodded, “A lot happened in those twenty years we were apart. But I’m looking forward to the time we have ahead of us.”

“I agree.” Jax smiled.

Finally, having a question of his own, Artorias softly spoke. “Aunt Ras, are you going to go on more adventures now with Uncle Jax?”

Sanguis studied Artorias’ expression, seeing the unspoken words behind the question: Was their aunt going to be too busy to spend time with the twins? For the boys, Rasilvenaira and Reiden were the only extended family they had and cherished. There was also Horus, but he was the last person he cared for the twins to spend time with.

“I’m sure your aunt will find time for you and your brothers, Artorias. She just might have less time. Regardless, you will still have your Aunt around. No need to fret about it.”

“Or, maybe we can go with her and Uncle Jax on their adventures!” Deus eagerly suggested. “Could we, Aunt Ras? Arty and I are pretty good with the Force.”

Before any answer could be given, Shadow returned and quickly took her place next to Sanguis. “You shouldn’t have waited on me. Go on and dig in while it’s warm. Sorin is out completely. Jax must have the magic touch.”

Ras shook her head at Arty’s question. “We aren’t planning on going on any adventures any time soon. I have a lot of responsibilities here.” She caught the wave of disappointment from Deus and smiled.

“If we do plan an adventure in the future though, I’ll make sure to bring you both along, as long as it’s okay with your parents.”

When Shadow returned, she offered her a warm smile, and everyone started to dig into the food, taking up their plates.

Jax grinned, “It’s because my arm’s tougher than Ras’. He wore himself out chewing on me.”

Ras laughed at that and took up her plate of food, and took a bite. “Mm, food’s good as always, Shadow.”

She knew she was often a bad influence on her nephews, usually encouraging their mischief. But she did her best to make sure they stayed safe, no matter what she was up to with them.

“Maybe we can take them to the Shame Corner next time we go. It’s a fun run, but safe, no danger other than possibly a sugar overload when they find the fudge section.”

“Oh, yeah, I’ve been through there; it’d be a great place to take them.”

“I’ve been meaning to take the family there after my last stop there,” Sanguis pointed out. “I’m sure the boys would enjoy it. However, you’d have to watch Deus. I had to stop him before he ate all the fudge I brought back last time.”

“It’s not my fault, it’s so good!” Deus protested with his mouth half-full. “And it’s not my fault, everyone else was so slow!”

“Deus, chew first,” Art quickly warned before Sanguis could. “Also, you were told only two pieces. You took six.”

“Again, not my fault.”

“Oh Deus.” Shadow shook her head. “Sometimes you’re too much like your father.”

“I don’t know, Ro,” Sanguis started, a playful smirk on his lips as he looked at his wife with a daring, accusing look. “You barely left me any jerky if I recall.”

“I’ve no regrets. It was too good.”

“Point proven.”

“Yeah, yeah.” The half-Sephi flicked his thigh beneath the table before a devious grin formed on her lips, her gaze drawn back to Jax. “So, Jax, what was Ras like back in the day? I’m curious to know just how much trouble she was.”

“Last I heard, they were adding an arcade, not sure when it will be finished. But there’s a lot to see and do there.” Ras smiled at the boys, then arched an eyebrow at Jax when Shadow asked her question.

“Yes, Jax, do tell.”

He laughed, “Oh, I will.” He smirked back at her. Then he turned his attention to Shadow. “She was quite the handful back then, though that hasn’t changed. She still is. She was very edgy back then. When we first met, she was on the run from a trandoshan bounty hunter. She couldn’t get to her own ship, so she came and borrowed mine. She was very opinionated and bossy.”

Ras just rolled her eyes at him. “I was not bossy. I just tended to have better ideas, and you didn’t want to listen to me.”

Jax laughed; it was clear he was having fun teasing her. “Mhm, Bossy. But she is right, she had good ideas a lot of the time. I got better at listening to her intuition, especially after the Kamin run. If anything, she’s mellowed a lot. Back then, she was very hot-tempered. And she’s always been very dangerous. Even a pirate like me had heard the rumors of the assassin called the StormRaven. I just never expected to meet her.”

“And what about you, hmm? Jax was stubborn and hard-headed, cute but he hated to admit that I was right and he was wrong.”

He huffed softly, and she stuck her tongue out at him.

“Basically, she hasn’t really changed that much from how she used to be. Though I do think she’s got more of a soft spot these days, with all her animals, and with her nephews. I never saw that side of her back then.”

“Back then, I couldn’t afford to have any soft spots, or I’d likely end up dead. It’s one reason I left the way I did: I was afraid of having too many personal attachments. I already had one with my adopted father that people tried to exploit, I didn’t want to risk you becoming another one.”

She sighed softly, “But now I’m in a different place, mentally and physically. And I don’t really care what people think anymore.”

Shadow understood in her own way, the half-Sephi remembering how she was willing to give up the throne and throw away all the power she had in exchange for marrying Sanguis and being there for her boys once she was sure the Empire was secured in its new home. Yes, she had faked her death, though it was more for security than it was for hiding the truth from the rest of the empire. Not that it had done much good, no thanks to her successor.

On top of that, Shadow was also familiar with avoiding personal attachments. That had been her for the longest time after losing her parents and her first husband. Fate always seemed to take away those closest to her, and she remembered the fear that had plagued her for weeks after Sanguis and she had both confessed their love. She was already pushing herself to the brink to ensure the safety of the twins, but as he always did, Sanguis had assuaged the trauma-born trepidation.

Shadow smiled to herself, but quickly pushed aside the memories and returned to the topic at hand. “Just be careful, Ras. I think this one might put more grey hairs on your head. Just try not to strangle him,” she jested.

Rasilvenaira laughed at that. “Oh, I have no doubt that he will. Good thing I’ve just decided to accept the grey hairs.”

She took a few more bites of food and sipped her wine. The food here was always good, and she didn’t mind wine as a once-in-a-while change from her preferred rum.

Turning her attention to her nephews, she smiled warmly at them.

“Arty, Deus, how have you been doing with your training?”

They were both growing well, so she imagined that Sanguis was doing his best to stay on top of their training, even with becoming Quaestor.

As expected, Deus was quick to speak first. “It’s going great! Mom’s been training us lately, and she’s been taking us camping a few times to work on our survival skills.”

“And how to use the environment to our advantage,” Artorias added before he took a sip of his water. “She’s been showing us how to move with the shadows at night when the moon’s out, though Deus always looks like a stiff droid every time he tries.”

“I do not! But even if I did, I don’t care all so much about stealth like you do. I like to rush in swinging! Overwhelm my opponent before they have the chance to react.”

“And that is why you always end up on the ground winded,” Sanguis interjected. “Such tactics will not work against someone with the Force. Even Mandalorians use stealth to their advantage, Deus.”

“Not that Brandon ever really did,” Shadow muttered with a sigh. “He always went in blasters blazing.”

“See! My dad did it! I can too!” Deus looked at his stepfather challengingly. “I just have to get stronger and quicker!”

Sanguis shook his head. “There’s a difference, Deus. Your father used blasters. He had range, and it’s easier to take someone by surprise with some distance. With a lightsaber, you face more risk. We’ve talked about this.”

The older twin groaned. “Still.”

Artorias studied his brother, sensing the rebellious frustration that seemed to be more prevalent in his twin in recent days. Though he disagreed with Deus, he sent a wave of encouragement to him through their bond before he returned his attention to his Aunt. “Overall, training has been good. I’ve been perfecting my Force cloaking technique. Well, I’ve been trying too. I struggle to maintain it when moving sometimes, but Mom says it takes a while.”

Rasilvenaira listened to the exchange, then smiled. “Deus, your parents are right. Even with blasters, your father took time to assess his foes before making his move. That is something you need to learn, especially since you are more of a melee fighter. Stealth can be invaluable in getting the advantage in a fight. Even more so when you are facing multiple enemies.”

“You both are doing very well, don’t let yourselves get frustrated. You’re still young. Arty, Force Cloak is a challenge to master, especially if you need to move while using it. The trick is to perfect it standing still first. Get so good at it that it takes only seconds to cast, and little effort to maintain. Then start moving, very slowly at first, gradually you will notice that the distance you can go before you break concentration will get longer. It isn’t something that happens overnight, but over weeks, months, maybe even years before you reach the level your mother and I have with it.”

Jaxyn nodded, “I may not know anything about the Force, but I do know training. I’d be happy to lend a hand if you want to train against someone using blasters.”

Ras nodded, “Learning the art of blocking and deflecting is very important, and while training against a droid can help, learning against an unpredictable real opponent would be even more helpful. Whenever you come visit me, that’s something we can work on. We can use the back few acres of my land where the forest is still thick and work on a few techniques at once.”

“Yeah, I’d be honored to help out. I’m nowhere near as good at stealth as this one, who’s a literal walking shadow most of the time, but I do fairly well at getting around without calling attention to myself.”

Deus sighed as his gaze lowered, disappointed to hear more confirmation of his father’s lectures. He clenched his fists, only to lighten up as he felt another encouraging wave from his twin. As stubborn as he was, a trait inherited from both parents, he had to admit he was in the wrong. All the same, it didn’t mean he had to like it.

Artorias, however, was thrilled with his Aunt’s and Uncle’s invitation, his golden eyes aglow with gratitude and anticipation. “I’d love that. Really. Although, since Uncle Jax has experience with blasters…”

He looked at his parents for approval, Shadow and Sanguis nodding in agreement for a wish he had long spoken of. He then looked at Jaxyn, fighting back the sudden shyness threatening to keep him silent. “Could…you teach me how to shoot? I really want to learn. As much as I look forward to perfecting my lightsaber skills, I want to be well-rounded.”

Jaxyn looked over at Arty and nodded. “Being well-rounded is a good idea. Never know when you might be stuck without your lightsaber someday. I can teach you. Your Aunt can help too. She’s actually a very good shot, though she dislikes blasters, so doesn’t use them by choice.

Rasilvenaira chuckled, “Yeah, I prefer up close and personal, but there have been times when a blaster was the only weapon available to me, so I had to learn to use them, whether I liked them or not.”

Jax smiled, “Learning to use a blaster will actually help your training overall, too. It teaches you spatial awareness and how to estimate distances by eyeballing it. That knowledge will come in handy even when you’re just using the Force. I’ve seen some of what Ras can do with it, and I can imagine several scenarios where being able to use that knowledge can make your efforts even more effective.”

“Agreed, consider using telekinesis and wanting to hit a specific target. Being able to judge the distance can help properly determine how much effort you have to put behind the attack to hit your target.”

She glanced over at Jax and then over to Shadow and Sanguis. “I could even set up a special training course in the back woods, it can help test them on what you’ve been teaching them, and teach them some new tricks. If you think that would be helpful.”

“I think that would be an excellent idea,” Sanguis concurred. “It would be good for both of them, and Artorias can get in his blaster training. I’d have taught them myself, but I can barely remember the last time I used anything remotely similar to a blaster. My people were very primitive compared to the rest of the galaxy, back then, and with the Sith, I only ever used my lightsabers. This will be perfect.”

“Agreed, and you’ll have a very dedicated learning,” Shadow added. “Artorias wishes to become a sniper.”

“Using a blaster repeater like Dad did would be cooler,” Deus remarked. “Sniping seems boring. You just sit there and wait.”

“But that’s what assassins do, Deus,” Arty pointed out. “Patience is the most important thing, whether it’s with a blaster or a blade. Plus, Mom says I have a good eye, so I think I’ll make a great sniper.”

He smiled as he looked at his Aunt. “Besides, blaster repeaters are too noisy and chaotic. Silence is much deadlier.”

Rasilvenaira nodded, “Excellent. I’ll see what I can get set up. It may take me a little bit of time, but it’ll be worth it once I get started. We can work out some training exercises to work on different skill sets.”

Jaxyn grinned, “Sounds like a plan, and you can count me in helping too, wherever I can.”

Ras smiled at him, “I’ll hold you to that.”

Jax smirked, “You can hold me any way you want.”

She reached over and swatted his shoulder. “Behave.”

He laughed. “Sorry.”

Ras rolled her eyes at him, “Uh huh.”

She looked back to the boys, “Some new challenges will keep you from getting bored with your training.”

Jaxyn chuckled, “Could use some of the tricks I used training my crew, that would definitely keep them sharp.”

“I wouldn’t mind some new training tricks myself; it never hurts to stay sharp.”

Jax grinned at her, “Oh, you don’t have to worry about that. I’ll keep you sharp.”

Rasilvenaira arched her eyebrow at him. “Think so, do you? Want to make a bet on that?”

“Sure, bet you I will win.”

She laughed, then turned her attention back to her meal. “We’ll see.”

The dinner continued with delightful conversation, Deus’ mood lightening up a bit while Artorias found himself free of his shell as he talked more and more with his new Uncle. At one point, Shadow disappeared to check on Sorin, only to return having found the youngling still fast asleep. When everyone had eaten their fill, she had the boys wish Ras and Jax goodnight before disappearing to their room for the night.

However, for the adults, the night was still a little young, and Sanguis saw an opportunity to get to know Jax some more as he invited the half-Kiffar to join him for a drink in his study. Of course, Shadow knew it was just another excuse to show off his collection of blades. However, for her, it was comforting to see that her husband had the chance of having a new friend who wasn’t so chaotic as Horus Blackheart tended to be during his few visits.

“Shall we let the men be, and chat in the tea room?” she asked Ras as she watched the men ascend the stairs. “I can have Mason brew us some tea I’ve recently acquired from Nagi, unless you’d like to try a more Sephi brew from Thustra.”

Jaxyn nodded and followed Sanguis to his study. It would give him a chance to get to know the man with the mysterious past. And he was always up for a good drink or two. He enjoyed dinner and having a chance to meet the boys that Ras was so fond of, but he couldn’t help being more relaxed around other adults than he was with children.

Rasilvenaira nodded and offered a warm smile. “The Nagi tea sounds good, thank you.” She followed her friend to the tea room and settled herself into one of the chairs.

“I was a little surprised how easily Sorin fell asleep on Jax. I keep telling him he’s got a way with kids and animals, he just doesn’t believe me because he hasn’t been around either much in his life.”

She sighed softly, “He’s a good man. I walked away from him once, and ended up regretting it ever since, then I spent so many years trying to avoid him because I was afraid to face him. I’m glad we finally reconnected.“

Shadow nodded and gestured to the ever-lurking Mr.Mason before he disappeared to the kitchens. She led Ras to the tea room, a quiet, cozy space where she often relaxed during rainy days. Ras’ words brought a smile once more to the half-Sephi as she took her seat in an armchair. “Well, our stubbornness can only last for so long until the yearnings of the heart are too hard to ignore.”

A soft chuckle escaped her, one of warm mirth. “Truth be told, Ras, I’m happy. I am very happy for you. Yes, you have your droids and animals, but to see you in this new light…well, it was long overdue and well-deserved. We both walk a dark and bloody path, and it weighs on us in ways we care not to admit to. A happiness like this is a precious thing that many others would think a Sith doesn’t deserve. I’m glad to see that proven wrong, and it also lightens my heart to know you have someone who will really look after you.”

Ras nodded, “He really does care, I can tell that. His persistence of searching for me and chasing after me for twenty years proved that to me. His little droid is adorable too, a quirky little D-O unit. He hasn’t warmed up to me yet, but hopefully he will. One of the Voorpaks has claimed Jax; she curls up on his shoulder, nestled against his neck. She tried to make a nest in his dreads, but they’re too thick for her. Cera won’t leave him alone if she can help it.”

A fond, slightly distant look crossed her face, “Phutari would be happy. He always wanted me to settle down and find someone to be with. I honestly never felt I deserved to have that kind of happiness. I guess the universe decided to prove me wrong, and I’m glad. The last week has been catching up and re-learning each other, rebuilding the fragile bond we have. I tried to cut it off back then, but I’m glad he didn’t let it go so easily. To be honest, I was surprised when he started trailing me, crossing paths with his ship so often over the last few years. I thought eventually he’d give up. But Jaxyn is nothing if not stubborn when he sets his mind to something. I truthfully think we’re good for each other. I know he’s good for me, but I like to think that I’m good for him too. He’s told me a lot of his story, but I feel there’s more that he hasn’t opened up to me about yet. But to be fair, there’s things I haven’t told him yet either. I’m sure we’ll get there in time. Rebuilding that deep trust between us is the key.”

She chuckled, “I suppose he’s just waiting to make sure I’m not going to disappear on him again.”

“Well, if you do, I’ll help him hunt you down,” Shadow teased, though deep down she knew she’d probably hold to that threat. “And I’m sure he’ll appreciate the truth when you feel the time is right to tell him. He loves you deeply. There’s no question about that. It will take a lot to chase him away.”

Shadow paused, her mind shifting through the evening’s events before she spoke once more, a mischievous grin forming. “So if all goes well, will I have a chance to be your maid of honor?”

Before Ras could answer, the door opened, and Mr Mason returned with the tea on a tray, laying it on the small table and pouring both cups for the women. “There you are, ladies. There’s honey in the jar as well as some sugar if that’s your preference. Is there anything else I can get you, Lady StormRaven?”

Rasilvenaira shook her head, “No, thank you, Mr. Mason.” She took a careful sip of the tea, then added a touch of honey and stirred it in before taking another sip. “Perfect.”

Once the man had withdrawn, she pondered Shadow’s question. “If he asks me, I would say yes. But I’m not going to push it. I’ll let him figure it out in his own time.”

She slowly sipped her tea for a moment as she collected her thoughts. “I know he loves me, and I love him too. I mean, what’s not to love? He’s handsome and talented, and I’d be crazy to let him go again.”

She took another drink of her tea. “How is Sanguis really doing with the House? I don’t want to see him burning himself out, stretching himself too far, trying to do everything, and it’s easy to do. I nearly did it myself back when I was Aedile, even, let alone when I got Quaestor.“

Shadow added a teaspoon of honey to her own tea before taking a sip. The soothing warmth was a welcome one, though she knew she’d have to fight the temptation of sleep that it normally brought. “I understand. However, if there are wedding bells in the future, I call maid of honor. Plus, I’m sure the boys wouldn’t mind being ringbearers, although gods help us if Deus has that responsibility,” she remarked jokingly.

She took another sip before answering Ras’ question. “Sanguis is throwing himself into it. He enjoys making himself useful, and I think it does feed his pride a bit, being able to put himself out there for the first time for the Empire. However, deep down, he does it for us. He seeks to create a power base that gives his name weight and inspires fear. However, at the same time, that also serves as a calling card to the Empire’s enemies, I’m sure. I learned that the hard way after we exiled ourselves to Nagi. I trust him, but I also sense that his efforts to protect his family will also endanger us. On top of that, I can already tell he feels it’s a responsibility he should bear alone. He forgets that he has a hidden blade at his side, or he feels he has no need for it. I have to remind him that he shouldn’t carry this burden by himself. I think part of it is he feels I did my time leading the Empire, and that I shouldn’t have to trouble myself anymore. He means well, as any man who cares for their family, but he’ll probably need me to knock sense into him a few times.”

She sighed. “Other than that, I think he’ll manage fine. He’s got the experience, and he has knowledge that could benefit the House. And, I can tell he enjoys the game of power that is expected, but I just pray he won’t lose himself to it. I hope I can be the one to keep him grounded, whatever comes his way.”

Rasilvenaira nodded, “At least he has you to be his anchor, even if he doesn’t think he needs it yet. For me, having my animals to come home to my animals helped keep me grounded. But you are right, having Jax helps in ways I’d never even realized I needed.”

She sipped her tea again and thought for a long moment. “I was really proud of him when he told me he actually quit pirating and went legit. That takes a lot. He was truly gifted as a pirate. He racked up a significant reputation with his ship, the Red Dawn. Certain levels of power feed the ego very well, and it can be hard to set the ego aside and stay focused on the bigger picture of what is good for the masses.”

“I remember when I first became Aedile of Acclivis Draco. I had a lot of attitude and big ideas and a big ego, and I was constantly clashing with older members of the house and clan. That made it hard for people to work with me. Eventually, I reached a point where I understood my faults and started making an effort to control my ego. I learned the hard way, through experience. That’s what is keeping me on the right path this time around. That and I’m older and have less need to prove myself anymore. I’ve done that.”

“I’ll do what I can to help Sanguis as well; that need to prove himself is going to be the hardest part to deal with when he doesn’t think he needs the help.”

Ras’ assurance to help Shadow’s husband brought peace to Shadow’s spirit. She relaxed back in the chair, letting her cup rest on her thigh. “Thank you, Ras. I appreciate it. I know Sanguis is bound to clash with someone at some point. He still views our Empire as something inferior, and gods know how many times I’ve heard him share how things should be. I don’t doubt he has grand ideas that could work and bring success. I just worry he might step on the wrong toes. Not that I don’t discourage that when it’s warranted, but as I always say, there’s a time and place for everything. I know, he knows that, but even he’s not above making mistakes.”

The younger Sith scoffed. “If anyone can probably speak sense into him better than I can, it would be you. I remember the few times you had to rein me in. If I recall, I was about ready to join ground forces planetside, and you made sure I didn’t leave the bridge. It was agonizing waiting around and directing from above when all I wanted to do was sink my blade into some Meraxis filth.”

Rasilvenaira chuckled, “Aye, I remember. And I was right there with you wanting to rip them to shreds. But you had to stay safely out of the conflict because you were too important. There’s a time for a leader to lead from the front, and a time to stay in the background. It is hard sometimes to know the difference, or to accept that. I remember the times Caliburnus was at war on Ptolomea, and I was in the same position as Quaestor, I had to direct from a safer, more defensible position, when all I wanted to do was to charge to the front and shed some blood. It was hard for me to hear that same advice from other experienced leaders who were my advisors at the time.”

She sipped her tea in thoughtful silence for a moment. “As long as he’s willing to accept advice, he’ll be alright. If he refuses to listen, he’ll learn the hard way, and I’ll be there to help him back up after he gets knocked down.”

“So, enough about Sanguis. How are you holding up with everything? I can’t imagine it’s easy to juggle helping him, running the Wolf’s Den, and looking after the boys.”

“Ha! Where do I begin?” Shadow chuckled and sighed dramatically. “The Wolf’s Den is good for bringing revenue and information, and Teyla is a huge help. However, the expenses, the maintenance, and having to stab someone here and there when things get out of hand, it’s a lot. As to the boys? I can’t complain. I enjoy being there for them, and teaching them what I know. The camping trips have been great for bonding, and there are days I forget I kill people for the Empire.”

Her expression shifted, becoming more downcast as a hidden weight came to the surface. “But there are times, Ras, I wonder if I’m a good enough mother. Not so much because Deus refuses to listen at times, or Artorias…”

She stopped herself. Shadow hadn’t told anyone about the nightmares the youngest twin had been experiencing lately, and how she had been feeling helpless trying to protect him from the horrors of the mind that stirred at night. “Just…I question at times if I’m really a good mother after I’ve been out shedding blood and embracing the darkness, even if for the sake of protecting them. At times, it feels like I don’t deserve having such innocent souls in my life.”

Rasilvenaira listened intently, letting the younger Sith vent, knowing she likely needed to, rather than keeping it all bottled up inside.

“First of all, you are a great mother, and you do deserve those boys. I know that doing what we do can lead down some dark spirals. It’s a constant struggle not to let yourself get pulled under. But you can’t give up because they do need you, just as much as you need them. They are your counterweight and anchor in the sea of darkness we navigate on a daily basis. For me, it’s been my animals that keep me on an even keel.”

She sighed softly, “Before that, I had Phutari, who was always there with love and forgiveness. That is our hardest challenge, learning to forgive ourselves even when others forgive us. It’s easy to say we don’t deserve it because we kill people for a living. It doesn’t matter the reason, whether it’s for profit, to protect those we care about, or to serve the Empire we’re bound to.”

“I’ve struggled with that guilt, telling myself I didn’t deserve any happiness or joy in my life. That’s so wrong, and I’m seeing it even more now with Jax in my life. Give yourself that forgiveness, and remember that the boys need you and you need them. They love you so much. Sorin especially will need all the love we can give him. I have a feeling his road will be more difficult than even his brothers.”

“We all need to find our own signposts along the road we travel. Let Sanguis and your boys be yours.”

There was a great alleviation of Shadow’s perturbation from Ras’ wisdom. She recalled a similar conversation with her father’s spirit in a vision, remembering how he had urged her to forgive herself for past sins. Though she had done so, the guilt of her ongoing transgressions as an assassin had troubled her as a mother. All she ever wanted was the best for her boys and to give them the love and future they deserved. She had never felt worthy enough to be their mother.

The half-Sephi inhaled, accepting the truth before exhaling out the insecurities and sabotaging lies she had whispered to herself. “You’re right. The twins were my anchor after losing Brandon, and they, Sorin, and Sanguis will continue to be so now. Just as Brandon was back then. They’re my light in the darkness, and I will be theirs.”

She offered a smile of gratitude. “Thank you, Ras. Really. I needed to hear that. Lately, Artorias has been dealing with something I don’t know how to remedy, and at times, I’ve been feeling like it’s my fault. And Sorin? Sanguis and I both worry about his future with the thirst he’s inherited. I hope we can help him learn how to control it. Especially, since it’s something he was born with.”

As the two continued their conversation, Sanguis, meanwhile, was, as expected, happily showing off his collection of blades to Jax. He let the half-Kiffar browse through the racks and cases lining the walls of his study, offering explanations and stories about some of the more unique pieces of his collection. Of course, he had also offered the man a share of ale that he kept reserved for guests.

Eventually, he backed off from the topic of weaponry, shifting the conversation to a more investigative one. “So, you and Rasilvenaira. I must admit, I was rather surprised by the story you two share. Then again, I suppose I’m in no position to question considering my own circumstances.”

Rasilvenaira smiled, then took a sip of her tea before speaking. “I’m glad I could help. What’s up with Arty? Maybe I can help.”

“As for Sorin, we’ll all be there for him, to keep him on the right path.”

Jaxyn was quite impressed by the collection of blades. He saw a few he could imagine Ras wielding, and that always made him smile. He listened intently to the stories Sanguis shared. And when the ale was offered, he happily accepted a mug.

“You have quite the collection, Sanguis. Some of these are absolutely stunning pieces. You’ve shown these to Ras, I’m sure? I can see her totally loving some of these blades.”

He turned to face Sanguis and took a sip of his ale, then smiled at his comment. “Sometimes I’m still surprised that I found her again. Spending twenty years chasing a literal ghost, my crew all left cause they swore I’d gone crazy. So without a crew, I ended up going legit as a small-time freighter. Maybe I was crazy but I just couldn’t let go of her, and now? I don’t plan on ever leaving her side. I love her with all my heart.”

“You and Shadow have a remarkable and special bond. I know Ras, and I have a bond, but I hope to see it growing stronger over time. And I know she loves those kids to pieces. Got to admit, they are great kids, and Sorin is adorable. I didn’t expect him to take to me so quickly. How old are they now?”

Sanguis nodded in regard to the blades. “Oh, yes, she’s seen them. I caught her eyeing a few, so I’ve got an idea for a gift this coming Sithmas. When Rowan and I were living on Nagi, I became good friends with a smith. I have him working on two blades customized with details suggested by Ro. I have him working on a Tehk’la blade for Artorias as well.”

Sanguis smiled, a touch of tenderness burrowing into his heart as he listened to Jax’s proclamation of love. Though the woman drove him mad with all the bad habits she encouraged for the boys, she was still family, and he was happy for both of them. “The right person is always worth the sacrifice, whatever that sacrifice may be. I’m happy for you both. As to Ro and me, I can only believe that Fate or the Force had a part in it, considering everything we’ve been through and how we came to find each other.”

Sanguis took a sip of his ale, but it wasn’t quenching another thirst that was stirring within. He reached for the flask in his pocket, unscrewed the cap, and sipped the crimson synthetic within before returning the flask to his pocket. “Sorin turned three a few months ago, and the twins are eight years old. Ras, though she tends to be a bad influence one way or another, has been a very essential part of their life. She helps balance out the twins, I think. She’s very good at addressing their different natures, which has done wonders for Artorias’ confidence lately. As for Sorin, well, she makes sure he’s loved, and as you know, makes sure he has someone to chew on.”

Downstairs, Shadow sighed. “Artorias has been having nightmares of himself losing control. In the dream, he says he feels enraged with a desire to harm and that he can never recognize anyone around him. He attacks them, and he can’t stop.”

She shook her head. “Artorias confessed to me that he’s scared that’s what’s going to happen to him, and that he feels a cold essence within. In all honesty, I’ve always sensed something different about him, and Sanguis sensed it immediately when he first met the boys. In a way, because of his own condition, it’s helped him to relate more with Artorias, and he does all he can to help him.”

Jax smiled, “Not familiar with Sithmas, but I guess I’ll learn with her. But that sounds like an amazing gift that I know she’ll treasure.” He took another drink of his ale, then chuckled as Sanguis went on.

“Somehow, I don’t find it surprising that she’s a bad influence. She’s quite the personality, and she does have a mischievous streak. But I’m sure she wouldn’t do anything that would really hurt the boys; she loves them too much. She’s definitely a free spirit, that’s for sure. I want her to know that I love her, but won’t try to tie her down. I wouldn’t change a thing about her, it’s what makes her, her.”

“Maybe I can help with his confidence, too, with some training exercises that he should be able to excel at. Don’t plan on making it easy on him, but I think I can fit the training to the boy and challenge him in ways that help him grow and feel proud of himself. And Sorin, he’s too cute. I didn’t mind him chewing on me at all, she was right, his teeth aren’t sharp enough to really hurt yet. I’m sure that will change as he gets older, but his desire to be held and to chew on people may change as well as he ages.”

Rasilvenaira nodded as she listened, then frowned slightly. “Hmm, nightmares are one thing I’m familiar with, and they all have some kernel of reality in them no matter how outlandish and twisted they become. They are somehow rooted in the real world. There’s got to be something going on that’s triggered them in Arty. Think I should try talking to him? Maybe he’ll open up to me about what’s going on when it’s just me and him. It would be easier to do now that I have Jax, I could get Deus to go with Jax out for some training or to see the animals while I talk to Arty.”

“Honestly, I think that would be a good idea,” Shadow concurred. “Sanguis has been trying some meditation techniques, but I think Art needs something more to help him. Another perspective might see what we’re unable to. You will probably have to coax him a bit. He doesn’t like talking about his nightmares much. During the day, he acts like nothing’s happened. Unfortunately, he puts on a good mask like his mother.”

Sanguis nodded in agreement with Jax, knowing Ras always meant well with the boys. In regard to Sorin, Sanguis hummed. “I hope he grows out of it, but I don’t know. This is something he was born with, so I have no idea how the thirst is going to affect him as he grows. For me, the change was instantaneous and agonizing. For him, I can only hope it won’t be so painful, though I can imagine he’s going to have his moments.”

The Nagai slid a finger along the edge of a longsword. “As to the training, I would appreciate it. I know Shadow and I do a lot already for the twins, and they’re coming along, but I think it’ll be good for Artorias. Another environment and another approach. I just want to warn you about Deus. He is very hardheaded, as I’m sure you saw. However, he will relent eventually. He just won’t enjoy admitting it. He’s willing to learn, but I think he also enjoys challenging others to test their will against his. As Shadow puts it, he’s a little lion who thinks he has a louder roar until someone else proves otherwise.”

Rasilvenaira nodded, “Of course. I can understand not wanting to talk about them. Phutari had to work hard to get me to talk about the ones I had as a child. He gradually helped me overcome them. Of course, as I grew and with the life I’ve had, I developed different nightmares. Jax is good at keeping them at bay, though, when we’re together.”

Jax smiled, “They’re good boys, and yeah, I saw some of Deus’ attitude, but that can be a good thing. I’ll find ways to challenge him more. I can set up two different courses, tailored to each one of them separately. Then one for them to work cooperatively to conquer. I have a feeling that the teamwork challenges will be just as challenging for him as his solo ones because they will have to really trust each other.”

“I won’t pretend to understand your condition fully, but I do find it interesting that it is hereditary. I can imagine it comes with a whole slew of difficulties that someone like me wouldn’t understand. But I’m willing to try, and I’ll do my best to be there as a friend for Sorin as he grows up, and I know Ras will be too. She adores him.”

Jax’s astute observation of the twins elicited a hum of agreement from Sanguis, as did the man’s idea for their training. “Agreed. They’ve teamed up before, but they still struggle working together. Deus tends to be too eager, and Artorias has a habit of being hesitant unless he feels the need to make up for Deus’ mistake. Though I suppose for Deus, he probably feels that their different approaches don’t work well together. He doesn’t see the bigger picture.”

His thoughts returned to Sorin. “To be honest, I never expected my condition to be hereditary either. The minute Sorin opened his eyes and revealed he did inherit it, I couldn’t help but curse myself. To know that my son wouldn’t be free of the thirst nearly destroyed me.”

The Nagai shook his head. “But, as always, Rowan accepted it, and assured me that our love for him would be enough. It still bothers me, but I feel better knowing that he has others who will love him. He has a chance at a grand future, and that’s all Rowan and I want for him.”

In the tea room, just as Shadow was about to respond, the door creaked open and Mr. Mason appeared with little Sorin himself holding his hand. “Sorry to bother you both, but I found the little Master coming down the stairs. He was asking for Lady StormRaven.”

Shadow rolled her eyes. “Of course he was. He probably thought she had already left and was worried he didn’t get to say goodbye. It’s okay, Mason. He’s not bothering anyone, though, if you could, could you get him a glass of milk?”

“Right away, Lady Caldiren.”

Mason watched little Sorin waddle lazily towards his Aunt before disappearing out the door. The three-year-old rubbed his tired eyes before throwing himself upon his Aunt. “Auntie Ras. Up?”

Rasilvenaira smiled when she saw Sorin come in with Mr. Mason. As he almost hugged her leg wanting up, she nodded. “Of course, sweetie.” She picked him up and settled him on her lap. “Why don’t you give Auntie Ras a big smile?”

He giggled and grinned up at her, and she noticed that indeed the little fangies were growing longer, but still not enough to draw blood except maybe with someone who was old enough to have thinned skin. She grinned back at him and leaned in to kiss his forehead before hugging him close.

“Very good smile, Sorin. You are just the cutest.”

Jaxyn listened carefully, nodding his agreement when Sanguis finished speaking. “I think too, he views his late father through rose-colored glasses. He’s probably worried that as he grows older, what memories he has of his father will fade. And it’s possible he feels some self-imposed duty to be as good as his father was. Though they are totally different people. Unfortunately, I never met his father, but if he used blasters and was known for charging in first, it sounds like he was a glory hunter. And those are tough shoes for a young boy to fill. We’re going to have to gradually show him that he’s his own best self, that he doesn’t need to meet or exceed what his father could do.”

“For Arty, that could also be playing a factor in his mind. Feeling like he needs to compare himself to his brother, to his father, while walking a completely different path. It’s not possible, and we need to gently show him that and help build his confidence in himself and his chosen path. It’ll be tough, but Ras and I will definitely do what we can to help the boys. And Sorin, too, once he grows older and wants to start training.”

What Jax said about the boys made sense. Sanguis often caught Artorias’ self-esteem falling whenever Deus learned a new skill quickly or bested Art in a spar. The times Artorias did win a duel, or accomplish something Deus struggled with, were meaningful victories to the young boy that he held onto until the next time Deus surpassed him. It was an endless cycle that both Shadow and Sanguis knew needed to end, but it was something that would take time.

As to Deus, Sanguis had the same conclusion as Jax. Even though the boys were only two when their father died, his echo had clung to them in the Force with the help of Shadow’s stories of the Mandalorian’s exploits. For some reason, the echo had been louder for Deus.

“You’re right, and I can’t hold it against Deus for wanting to walk in Brandon’s footsteps. I’ve done my best to make it clear that I don’t intend to replace the man, and I’ve respected Rowan’s request to honor their late father’s wishes of letting them choose their own path. I fear at times, Deus still thinks I’m trying to dissuade him, when all I want is for him to think things through before he acts. If he wants to follow the Mandalorian path as his father, so be it. I just don’t want him to get himself killed recklessly while doing so, and I’m struggling to get him to see that.”

Shadow smiled as she watched Sorin smile, his red eyes lighting up from the kiss before he buried his face into his Aunt’s neck for a snuggle. “Be careful, Ras. He’ll start chomping there next,” she teased. “You’ve spoiled him rotten.”

Rasilvenaira chuckled softly and brushed her fingers through Sorin’s silky hair. “I can’t help it. He’s just so cute. And he’s fine if he does, won’t hurt any more than Jax’s nibbling on my neck.”

Jaxyn nodded. “I agree, and I totally understand. You’re trying to protect them from themselves, but they don’t see it at this age. It’s hard for them to see the big picture when they’re only focused on their here and now. I know I gave my parents a lot of grey hairs from the time I could walk. I lost them when I was fourteen to a pirate attack. I remember cursing myself for being a coward because I hid the whole time. But that’s the only reason I survived, because I listened to my mother’s words. But I still remember feeling guilty. Survivor’s guilt, they call it, at least that’s what Ras told me.”

He took another long drink of his ale, thinking. “Knowing what I know, and with Ras’ insights on both boys, I feel confident that some additional training with us will help. It will challenge them in different ways, force them to think on the run. Then, when they come back to your training, they can feel proud of themselves for any progress they make.”

He sighed softly, thinking again as he often did of Ras. “She really does love those boys. I can’t help but wonder if she doesn’t miss not having one of her own. I can understand why she never did; her line of work doesn’t exactly encourage motherhood. Maybe I’ll broach the subject of maybe adopting an orphan that needs a good home.”

The proposed plan for Deus and Artorias sat well with Sanguis, though at the same time, he didn’t wish to add more to Ras’ plate. “I’m all for this, but I don’t wish to burden Ras on top of her duties as Quaestor, as much as I know Rowan would appreciate the help. Despite how that crazy Raven of yours enjoys giving me a hard time in some form or fashion, I don’t wish to exhaust her either.”

He smiled at the thought of Ras having her own brood of little ones, imagining the love-filled chaos. “I suppose in a way, she already has adopted one, when you think of it. She took Brelon in, but I do believe someone younger would bring further joy to her life. Especially with you by her side.”

Shadow could only chuckle. “Sorin’s going to be asking to spend the night at your place often in the future. I can see it already. Then you’ll be calling me begging for me to pick him up,” the half-Sephi remarked jokingly. “But truly, Ras, I’m grateful he has you. I worry about how others might treat him if they ever notice he’s not exactly ‘normal’, as is. Especially since Sanguis plans to put him in the Imperial Naval Academy when he’s old enough. The idea itself frightens me.”

Rasilvenaira smiled warmly as she was stroking Sorin’s hair, and he sleepily grabbed her hand with one of his and promptly stuffed her fingers in his mouth. She understood the concerns Shadow was feeling. Having been born “outcast” just because she was different, she also knew how it could affect a child. She would never let that happen to Sorin.

“By the time he’s old enough to go to the academy, I’ll teach him how to control that part of himself, between me and Sanguis he should be fine. Our little Sorin will grow up into quite a talented young man. I just know it.”

Jaxyn laughed softly, “I don’t believe it’s possible to exhaust that woman. I have tried, and she always ends up wearing me out first. For a woman at her age, she is phenomenal. I think having someone else in her life to give her love to would be really good for her. I do want to ask her to marry me, soon. I think I’m finally over worrying that I’ll wake up to find her gone again, especially since she has so much invested here, with her menagerie and her work as Quaestor and caring about the Clan in general. I’m finally able to accept that she isn’t going anywhere, and I don’t plan to leave now that I found her. She’ll have to kill me to get rid of me now.”

“I think she just enjoys giving people she cares about a hard time, guess it’s her way of keeping us on our toes. I’ve met Brelon and Tivran, she made sure of that. Both of them respect her a great deal, though Brelon seems to have her same habit of giving people a hard time. Tivran is a lot more reserved, almost shy, but I think after we talked awhile, they both approved of me being with Ras.” He grinned at that, quite pleased with himself.

“But in all seriousness, I’m sure she knows her limits and wouldn’t have offered it if she didn’t think she’d have the time for it. But, I’ll be there to make sure she doesn’t somehow overdo it.”

He finished his ale and set the mug aside, “Also, if you ever need someone to talk to, man to man, don’t hesitate to reach out to me. We’re both blessed with remarkably strong women, and I know I’m lucky that she’s always willing to listen to me, but I also think it’s nice to have another man to talk to sometimes.”

“Well, so long as you treat her well, then you have Shadow’s and my support should wedding bells be heard in the future,” Sanguis jested half-heartedly. He knew Jax was a good man, but beneath the playful banter, the threat stayed true.

“I suppose you’re right, and it’s just another way for Ras to show she cares. Rowan can be the same way with me and vice versa. As to Tivran…”

He thought about his cousin for a moment, his mind drifting back to their hunt on Korriban. “He’s reserved, yes, but the fire that burns within him when he chooses to unleash it is an inferno. As much as I disapprove of the trouble Brelon drags him into, I’m glad they’re friends, and I’m grateful he’s close to Ras as well. We’ve become close over time, but there are times I feel a certain distance. We are very distant, after all, blood-wise. It doesn’t surprise me that you’ve won his approval. He’s got a good heart despite his hardships, and you’re not as intense as I can be at times.”

Sanguis half-smiled at Jax’s offer before finally taking a sip of the ale he had nearly forgotten. “I appreciate that. Unfortunately, I tend to frighten most, or I’m found inapproachable, at the least. Reiden, the other Uncle the twins have adopted, steers clear of me unless I need him for House-related work. Horus, who gods help you if you meet him, is a brash drunk most of the time with an ego powerful enough to knock a rancor off its feet. Brelon, I can’t really say we’ve ever really…talked.”

He shrugged. “Though, frankly, I’ve never made an effort to make friends with anyone else. Just allies. Old habit, I suppose. I didn’t exactly make friends back in the old days, either. Couldn’t afford to without risking a blade in my back. I have Rowan, and to me, she’s all I ever needed. And, Ras, well, you already know about that.”

Shadow nodded, a soft smile once again erasing her maternal worries. “That’s all I could ever want. For all three of them.”

Once more, the door to the tea room opened, and Mr. Mason appeared with Sorin’s milk. “Sorry for the wait. I wanted to make sure the milk was warm enough, and I added a bit of chocolate. I hope you don’t mind, Lady Caldiren, but I thought it would be a good treat for him.”

“Not at all. Thank you, Mason,” she responded as the butler placed the cup on the table. When he left, Shadow sighed. “Ugh, I wish he wouldn’t call me that. I’m no noble. I’m a smuggler’s daughter. I thought I escaped all the fancy titles when I gave up the throne. Just feels…weird.”

Rasilvenaira offered a warm smile and nod of thanks to Mason as the man set the cup of milk down. She gently pulled her fingers out of Sorin’s mouth and kissed his hair. “Would you like your milk?”

He had started to pout when she took her fingers away, but the mention of his milk had him smiling happily and squirming on her lap. She helped him turn so he was sitting with his back against her chest, then reached over and got the cup and handed it to him.

“You guys do a great job with all three, and like I said, Jax and I will do our best to help you with them.”

She chuckled at Shadow’s complaint, “Have to say I know the feeling. I’m nothing but an assassin and Sith, him always calling me Lady StormRaven makes my skin itch, but I guess it’s just his way of being polite, though I never have been one for formalities, as you know.”

Jaxyn nodded at Sanguis’ words, and he knew that regardless of the expressed lack of need, he would still be there for the man if he ever did decide he wanted to talk about anything. Perhaps once they got to know each other better and there was more trust between them. Filing it aside, he carried on with the conversation.

“I haven’t met Reiden or Horus yet. I also heard that Brelon has his own apprentice now, but I haven’t met him yet either. Brelon said he’s a Cathar. Hope to meet him soon. Tivran struck me as one of quiet power, honestly. I figured that he could hold his own in a fight if he had to. Brelon too, he’s a scrappy one. Ras told me he gets in cantina fights quite often and will come over sporting bruises and black eyes and want her to pity him. Ras teases him about him being a drama queen when he comes over looking for attention.”

Jax’s description of Brelon matched what Tivran had told Sanguis, minus the drama queen part. As to the Cathar, Sanguis had only been granted a brief glimpse of the apprentice, but had never officially met him. Tivran had shared a few experiences from the times he spent with Brelon during training, but that was about it.

“Reiden is a good man. The boys love it when he takes them for an outing. You’ll probably see him this coming Sithmas if not before. If you ever meet Horus, well, best you have some alcohol on hand to get through his banter. Best to dull the senses to make it bearable.”

“Oh, I know,” Shadow affirmed. “We’re made for the shadows. Not the spotlight. I mean, before I made my debut, I was enjoying a peaceful life in a cabin both on Judecca and Ragnath.”

She gestured around her. “All of this? Feels too big and too grand, but it’s a necessary facade. I made too many enemies on the throne. I can’t afford to appear meek anymore.”

The assassin thought back to her mentioning of Judecca, a thoughtful glint flashing in her eyes. “Do you ever miss it, Ras? Cocytus?”

Rasilvenaira nodded. “I’m glad I managed to stay low key here. But I remember the house Thran built on Ptolomea. So ostentatious, but so was Thran. Mm, I do miss Ptolomea a lot sometimes. The loss of the whole system was just such a senseless waste just for the Iron Throne to make a point. They wanted to make an example of us. But, we survive, and we adapt.”

“Play the game until we win it.” She laughed softly, “The odds may be against us, but I always have enjoyed a good challenge.”

Sorin waved his now empty cup under her nose and she smiled at him. “All gone? Good boy, it’ll help you grow big and strong like your brothers.”

She took the empty cup from him and set it on the table. Then she let him snuggle against her chest, and he happily grabbed her arm to chew on again. She brushed the fingers of her free hand through his hair and rubbed his back. He apparently took comfort from it and she let him enjoy himself.

Jaxyn laughed, “I haven’t heard mention of Horus until now. Guess I’ll have to ask Ras about him just to see what she says, since she omitted mentioning him. She did mention Reiden, and I look forward to meeting him. But just in case I do always have my flask of rum on me. With it being Ras’ favorite there won’t be any shortage when I need to refill it.”

He sighed softly, “I truly appreciate the hospitality and warm welcome. I wasn’t sure how well received I’d be but Ras kept telling me it would be fine. It just feels like I’m stepping into a full life that she’s built without me all these years, and I still worry sometimes that she’ll get tired of me. But I’m probably just overthinking things and worrying for nothing. I think being part of this Brotherhood has been good for her, I know she really cares about her Clan.”

Sanguis could relate, thinking back to his wife’s devotion. “It’s become a home for Ras and Rowan. A place of belonging. It’s still taking some getting used to for me, but you’ll fit in fine. We’re all here to help you feel at home if you ever need anything. I think you’ll probably enjoy the holiday season. A time when we can forget some of life’s hassles. The last Sithmas was the first one where we all gathered together, and I think this one will be even more special. Just be warned, my wife may be hanging mistletoe just for the fun of it.”

Shadow sighed contentedly as she watched Sorin resume his chewing. She reflected once more on how far they had come since Cocytus’ demise, nostalgia for her time on Judecca and Caina briefly striking an emotional chord. “At least the twins were born on Judecca before it was glassed. I just wish there was something left of their homeworld to show them. And Caina…gosh, I miss the Citadel. Whenever the blizzards would dissipate, and the skies were clear, it was a lovely view seeing the auroras reflected on the ice.”

She shrugged. “But, like you said, we survive and we adapt. Plus, the Caperion System isn’t without its own charms. Just a shame Ragnath suffered as it did. I miss Caelestis City.”

Rasilvenaira nodded, “Yeah, at least we still have some usable spots on Ragnath thanks to the domes, but it is a shame, so much senseless destruction.”

Sorin burbled and made happy sounds, hugging her arm closer as he nommed away. She smiled at him, cooed tenderly as she put her free hand on his tummy. “Such a good boy.”

Then she looked back up at Shadow, “Yeah, I know, I’m spoiling him. But he will grow out of wanting this when he grows a little older, maybe another year or two and by then his fangs will probably be long enough to actually hurt.”

“I miss the wild jungles of Ptolomea, going hunting with Veritas, or just exploring the depths of the wilds.” She sighed softly, “I’ve got a good place where I am now though, with enough untouched land around my estate for survival training and Force training.”

Jax tilted his head curiously, “Mistletoe? Oh… is that the one where you’re supposed to kiss under it? I heard mentions of it during Life Day celebrations when I was planet side offloading goods or restocking provisions. I’ll keep an eye out, though I suspect if Ras knows about it, I won’t be able to miss it.”

“I’m looking forward to the holidays, it’s not something I was able to really pay much attention to when spending my life on a ship. Especially in the last six years or so that I’ve been on my own after the last of my crew left me to continue my fool’s errand as they called it. But now I have Ras and a reason to celebrate.”

Sanguis nodded and took a large sip of his ale before setting the mug aside. “Always helps to have someone special to celebrate with. Rowan will find a way to make it extra special this year, I’m sure. For someone who enjoys the hunt, she sure has a soft spot for these things. Oh, and this year she is planning to have some spiced wine, so that’ll be something to look forward to.”

He chuckled softly. “It’ll be a good time, that much I can promise you. Although I’m sure it’s getting late to discuss such things further. I don’t wish to hinder you, considering I’m sure Ras has a busy day tomorrow. All the same, it’s been a pleasure meeting you and getting to know you.”

Downstairs, Shadow perked up, feeling Sanguis’ presence brush against hers with a brief telepathic message. She looked at the chronometer, finally realizing the time. “I didn’t realize what time it was, though I myself can’t complain. I’ve been enjoying our conversation. It’s been a long time.”

Rasilvenaira sighed softly and nodded, “I’d lost track of time too. It has been too long since we had time to just sit and chat. And I always love time spent with the boys.”

She looked down at Sorin who was half asleep again. She rose carefully and handed him over to Shadow. He whined softly when she gently pulled her arm away from him, but was too sleepy to protest more than that.

“I suppose I should collect Jax, I know I have to get back to work tomorrow, and I imagine Sanguis does too. Reckon we should be good guests and call it an evening.”

“If you want to go put Sorin to bed, we’ll wait to say goodnight before we leave.”

Jaxyn chuckled, “If the spiced wine is anything like the spiced rum Ras favors, I’m sure it will be wonderful.” Then he nodded, “I suppose it is getting late. Should we head back down, and I’ll find Ras so we can head home. It’s been a pleasure to get to know you too, Sanguis. I look forward to more opportunities for us to talk.

“Likewise. You’re welcome over anytime.” Sanguis led Jaxyn out of the study room and headed downstairs, passing Shadow as she ascended with their son in her arms. Reaching the bottom, he offered a smile and a curt nod to Ras in the foyer. “Thanks for letting me borrow Jax. We had a good chat. I hope Ro didn’t chat your head off,” he teased.

Shadow meanwhile made it to the boys’ room, Tsume resting outside the door as Loki once did. She entered quietly and carefully made her way to Sorin’s bed and tucked him in. In the bunk bed close by, Deus slept in a tangle of sheets, the boy muttering something about defeating a Krayt Dragon and punching a Tusken Raider. On the bottom bunk rested Artorias, or so Shadow thought until his golden eyes opened and met her gaze.

“Can’t sleep, Arty?”

He shook his head, and Shadow sighed. She knelt next to him and kissed his forehead before gently squeezing his shoulder. “I’ll come stay with you for a bit, okay? I just need to tell your aunt and uncle goodbye.”

The boy nodded before turning over on his side, clutching a stuffed Loth-Wolf. His fear pained her heart, but all she could offer at the moment was her presence once she returned. Squeezing his shoulder again as she straightened up, she then left the room and headed back downstairs.

“Sorry about that. Was checking on the boys.” She forced a smile, pushing her worries aside. “Thank you two for coming. Tonight was great, and it was good to finally meet the man who tamed our Raven’s heart. Someone has to keep her in line,” she jested.

Jaxyn smiled and nodded to Sanguis as he followed the man downstairs. When they reached the foyer, he moved over to stand beside Ras. She looked over at him and smiled, “You boys have a nice talk?”

He nodded, “Yes, we did, thank you. Have fun talking girl stuff with Shadow?”

She nodded, “Yes, it was fun having a chance to chat.”

She glanced over to Shadow and arched a brow in silent question, sensing there was something up. But she remained silent for the moment.

Jax chuckled softly, “It was a wonderful evening, thank you for the hospitality. But I wouldn’t bet on me being able to keep her in line, she’s pretty tough.”

“Tough and stubborn,” Shadow quickly added. “But, we love her all the same.”

Sanguis rolled his eyes in jest, only to receive a playful punch in the arm. “Alright, alright. Yes, we all love her, you violent woman.” He then pulled Shadow against him and shook hands once more with Jaxyn. “You two have a good night, and fly safely. Ro and I will be looking forward to hearing from you for the boys’ training.”

As their farewells were said and their guests made their exit, Sanguis sighed and rubbed his forehead. “It’s been too long since I was this social.”

“Well, you might as well get used to it. It’ll be good for you.” Shadow kissed his chin and smiled. “Did you have a good time, at least?”

“I did. He’s a good man. I just feel sorry for him.”

This time ,Shadow elbowed him. “Be nice.”

Sanguis chuckled, waving his hands in the air for peace. “Alright, alright. I will. Anyway, it’s getting late. Shall we retire?”

“Yes, but you go on ahead. I’m going to stay with Artorias for a bit.”

Sanguis didn’t need an explanation. He pulled her into his arms and kissed her forehead. “Alright. Just don’t forget to come to bed. You need your rest, too.”

“I won’t, I promise.”

Her husband held her a moment longer, gracing her lips with an affectionate kiss before he pulled away and ascended the stairs. Shadow watched him disappear before she did a routine patrol through the first floor and met with Mr. Mason for his nightly report. Only then did she head upstairs back to the boys’ room.

Before entering, she paused, remembering Ras’ words about self-forgiveness. She closed her eyes, emptying her mind of all the self-condemnation that plagued her often. “I am a good mother. I love my sons. I deserve them. I deserve all this.”

Feeling a sense of peace wash over her, the half-Sephi re-opened her eyes and entered the room. Whatever the future held, she would hold on to those truths, and she would move forward for the sake of her family. It was all she could do, no matter what trials and tribulations were in store for them.
