Slim streams of crystalline liquid stretched out in the sand before Yeyu, like fingers running through a lover’s hair. His petite, bare feet followed the widest one, the faint blue-green of sea water leading him through loose scattered trees with heavy, fan-shaped leaves. In one hand he held silken shoes, in the other a frosted glass filled to the brim with a sunny orange slush.
Scurrying along the water’s edge, a soft blue-grey Pikobi raced ahead of Yeyu. The vibrant yellow underside of Zei’s crest flashed as the feathers lifted with excitement. Tiny, sharp black talons left dainty imprints in the sand as he darted toward the vast expanse of lazily rolling waves. Dappled sunlight created a serene and simple path, Yeyu’s feet following it almost instinctively.
Coming from the shelter of the tropical grove he stopped and dropped his shoes, lifting a hand to shade his eyes. As far as he could see the water stretched out before him. Sighing contentedly, Yeyu plopped right down in the damp sand. He didn’t bother to save his satiny shoes from the gentle ripples of salt water that approached and receded.
Plush lips sipping the zingy orange drink, mismatched eyes closed with a delighted hum. As the slush disappeared from his glass, he leaned back on an elbow and basked luxuriously. The rich sunlight lapped in tandem with the waves, heat rolling along his figure even as cool water retreated. This was a paradise compared to the cold metal and sterile halls of the ship that brought him here.
“Ahh…sweet sun and nothing but time.”
Kitty Reign slips through the sparse trees. Her golden skin catches the sun light as it filters through the trees. Given the heat, she isn’t covered from head to toe in her usual stealth garb. Instead she is wearing strappy black sandals that she could still run in if she had to. A dark purple swim top covers her top leaving her stomachache, shoulders and back exposed for optimal sun bathing. She loves a good nap in the sun. Although today she may need to apply the sunscreen that is stashed in her bag that is strapped to her back. Black cargo shorts with an assortment of pockets to stash other tools, are sitting over the matching swim bottoms that she is wearing. Quietly heading to the beach slightly ahead of her. She emerges into the bright sunlight and closes her eyes as she sinks her toes into the warm sand. She sighs happily. Then stretches languidly. “This is puurrfect!” She notices Yeyu, sitting in the sand down the way. His pets scattered about and playing. He was one of her first friends in the clan. His pets causing chaos in just the right times. A smile flits accessed her face, and she slinks back a little to come around behind him. She scoops a bit of the fresh cool water up in her hands and prepares to throw it at her friends back.
Yeyu was lost somewhere between the swirling colors of a daydream and the mindless hum of meditation by the time Kitty had snuck up on him. The crisp splash of salt water on his sun-warmed skin jolted the hybrid from his summer stupor. An indignant sound peeled from parted lips as Yeyu spun to discover the culprit.
It took no time at all to recognize Kitty Reign. She’d been a vital part of his most recent mission for Vizsla. She, like him, relied more on stealth and cleverness to achieve their goals than brute force. A friendship had formed easily and his disgruntled squawk melted quickly into a laugh.
“Kitty!” he cried out gleefully and moved to stand up, smiling brightly, “I’m surprised to see you in the sunshine! Thought you might be allergic to coming out of the shadows.”
She laughs hysterically at the… squeal, that Yeyu let out. Her smile stretching from ear to ear. Yeyu was very animated when excited, startled or, well most of the time she had known him. Kitty found it entertaining to see his reactions. She enjoyed the easy comraderie they had developed. She was a bit more reserved at first but of course the sheer chaos that came with all of Yeyu’s little critter made plotting some new prank was super fun. “Not allergic per say. I love sun bathing as much as anyone, but my skillet doesn’t really lend itself to hanging out in broad daylight.” She looks around and is counting critters. “Are you OK with your little gang running free out here? I don’t want one getting lost. Never know when we might need to shut the power off to Scylla’s ship again” a sly smile forms on her lips as she holds an arm out to help him up and give a friendly hug.
thunk. An arrow hit its mark in the dead center of an X carved into a tree trunk. The woman who fired it looked completely unimpressed. There was barely a breeze, and trees didn’t move. It could barely be considered true practice, but it had to do given her circumstances. Her family had insisted on her using the Brotherhood’s all expense paid vacation to finally take a load off, to take some time to herself. Especially after fighting in the war.
She sighed and lowered her bow, her sweatshirt hanging loose and open. She wore the burgundy two piece that she had picked up with Sebastian for their sparse beach trips on Selen. They always seemed to be too busy to be consistent about it. The Kendis walked over to the tree she had injured, her bare feet on soft grass, and removed the arrow. It had cut deep, just as it always had.
The rustling of leaves and clinking of metal bodies arrows had her turning her head at a rapid pace. A creature of some sort had managed to get an arrow out of her quiver. If it had been one of her normal arrows, the vigilante wouldn’t have cared. But it was a cryoban arrow. If it went off in the forest, not only would the critter die but others might as well. She cursed under her breath and gave chase, grabbing her quiver along the way to make sure no other curious creatures could get ahold of them.
Lektra’s pursuit brought her to the beach, it’s clear water seemingly endless along the horizon. The urge to stare at the view almost took her, but there was a job to be done. She continued her chase until she happened upon the pikobi and what she now assumed was it’s owner, along with another.
The Firrerreo took a deep breath in before she spoke, having chased the creature for some time. Her face was flushed silver, but not from exertion, from embarrassment. “Your pet is going to hurt someone,” she said bluntly, wiping some sweat away. New people. Gross.
The beat of party music could be heard long before a purple Nautolan, dressed in a two piece swimsuit and a sarong with head tendrils loose instead of their usual pulled back, stepped through the foliage on to the pristine beach, two large, almost fishbowl sized, and brightly coloured drinks in both her hands. Unlike most of her kind, Scylla felt more at home in the stars, but even she couldn’t deny the benefits of a good beach vacation. Particularly one that was all expenses paid. The pirate captain grinned to herself. She was going to take full advantage of that.
Sipping on one of her drinks and shaded by a wide brim straw hat, Scylla surveyed the beach over the top of her sunglasses. Her eyes narrowed slightly at the sight of the pikobi. Thankfully there were no electronics aside from EK-0H, that she could see. “Stay well out of reach of that thing,” she muttered to the speaker droid. There was a slight change in the music as he chirped an affirmative.
Continuing her scan of the beach, Scylla spotted Kitty and Yeyu in the crystalline water. She had liked both of them well enough, though she was very unlikely to let Yeyu’s menagerie roam her ship freely ever again. She then spotted someone she didn’t know approaching the pair and the pikobi, a Firrerreo woman carrying a bow and quiver of all things, and raised a brow in curiosity. Looking to her speaker droid she shrugged and made her way down as well.
“Fancy seeing yous here,” the pirate called out to the group as the pair approached, sighing a bit in contentment as the salt water lapped at her feet. She was still a Nautolan after all. Looking towards the new Firrerreo, she nodded in greeting, unable to reach out with a free hand, “I don’t think we’ve had the pleasure?”
Kitty whips her head around. Sending her multi-toned grey and brown hair, which is currently braided in two French braids, flying over her shoulders and coming dangerously close to smacking Yeyu in the nose, to look at the newcomer and then at the pikobi. “Zei, you raskal, what have you gotten into now?” she chides. Kitty reaches down and gently picks the pikobi up, takes the arrow out of its beak, and carefully hands it back to the strange Firrerreo. “Hello, my name is Kitty Reign. Sorry about our little friend here. Yeyu normally has them on a tighter leash, but I don’t think he expected to cause any trouble out here.” After making sure the stranger has a firm hold on the potentially deadly looking arrow, Kitty looks at Scylla as she approaches. Never having seen the pirate outside her ship or with her tentacles free, she is kinda shocked. “Oh! Scylla! I didn’t think you ever parted with your ship. It’s nice to see you out here. You know you look very at home here.” She smiles at the pirate. It was her ship she had spent the majority of the war on, so it kind of felt more like home. And she knew just how protective of it the Nautolan was. That didn’t stop Kitty from pulling the odd prank or two by moving tools or changing some wires here and there so the lights started blinking for no reason. Kitty didn’t mind even getting caught once or twice. She was made to fix her mess and at the same time, got to bond with Scylla here and there.
Yeyu could barely think, let alone respond to Kitty. His wayward Pikobi had stirred up mischief and lured over a stranger. While the newcomer did not look hostile, she did not look entirely thrilled either. He had the courtesy to look a bit sheepish as he glanced between the arrow and Zei, who was obviously pleased with himself. The creature’s crest was standing upright, the bright yellow underside exposed as he trilled and strutted around their feet.
“My apologies. Zei is a bit enthusiastic about showing off his skills.”
Yeyu gave a half bow, more out of habit than an actual need for etiquette seeing as they were on a beach on vacation. As he straightened up, he caught sight of Scylla approaching and toed the Pikobi behind him as if to hide the evidence of another mishap.
“Scylla! You look lovely and very relaxed…let’s hope it stays that way?”
Behind him there was a distinctly wooden, sharp crack. A slender tree with fan-shaped leaves heaved over, crashing into the sand and sending up a small, billowy cloud of dust. From the obscured space, his timid charhound slunk away from group to find another tree to hide under. Yeyu beamed and shifted to block the view, lifting his hands a little at the Nautolan as if she might swear at him again.
“I promise this is not a repeat of last time, despite how it looks!”
As the sound of music came closer and closer, Lektra let out an internal sigh. Another person. More socializing. Wonderful. She didn’t want to appear rude to the woman the two in front of her seemed to know, so she kept a soft smile. “We have not,” Lektra said. “My name is Lektra. I won’t be bothering you all for long, I just wanted to make sure that creature didn’t explode.” She pointed to the Pikobi that Kitty had now picked up. Graciously, she accepted the arrow from the Firrerreo and slid it back into her quiver.
“Lektra Kendis,” the archer replied, adding her last name now that Kitty had. It seemed the Nautolan was named Scylla. “It’s okay, really. I just didn’t want it getting hurt.” She watched as Yeyu tried to cover things up as another creature began to contribute to the mayhem. She couldn’t help but chuckle at the effort.
Mismatched eyes - one blue, one brown - flickered from the Pikobi to Lektra. While her initial vibes were a bit standoffish, she seemed alright enough to him. Anyone that was willing to spare the Pikobi or show any concern for something most considered small and inconsequential had to be at least decent.
He tilted his head curiously, the ink spill black of his hair sliding over his shoulder as he observed her. Then, reaching into his pocket he pulled out a handful of elegantly wrapped hard candies. They shined in the sunlight, their foil encasement a prismatic shimmer in his palm.
“I’m Yeyu. Thank you for not just killing him.” He held the sweets out for her to take, lips curving in a warm and genuine smile, “Megarice Cremes, my favorite. Please try some!”
Belatedly he motioned to the other two, adding in, “Come, come! I have plenty for everyone!”
Scylla smiled back at Kitty. Despite the Firrerro’s constant effort to mess with her ship, the pirate quite liked her. Scylla shrugged. “In complete fairness we were in the middle of a war. There wasn’t a lot of opportunity to go out and party and I didn’t want my ship getting blown up. Now that its done and we’ve got credits though…” EK-0H started playing more of a club mix, and Scylla grinned at Kitty, dancing a little. “Happy to let loose.”
She turned to Yeyu and raised a brow, looking over the tops of her sunglasses. She glanced down as he pushed the Pikobi behind him. “Appreciate the flattery.” At the sound of cracking tree, she sighed, shook her head and took a long drink. “Nope. Not my ship, not my problem.” The Nautolan turned back to the back towards the newcomer, her black eyes studying her carefully. The Firrerro seemed more uncomfortable than anything and not a particular threat at the moment.
“Scylla. Captain of the Siren’s Revenge. Pleasure to meet you, Lektra Kendris.” She gave a flourished bow, drinks still in hand. “You may want to just take the candy. He can be pretty persistent. He grows on you though.” She flashed Lektra a grin.
Lektra’s knuckles cracked as her grip tightened around her bow. She didn’t want to come off as aggressive but the louder noise of music and sudden offering of things had her feeling almost overwhelmed. She had to stop and take a deep breath in, just like here mom has taught her.
The woman awkwardly dipped her head in response to Scylla’s bow, unsure if it was a custom that Scylla’s culture required to be reciprocated. Her smile made the vigilante hopeful that she was doing alright in the moment.
“I wouldn’t have killed him,” Lektra clarified, not wanting to come off as violent like that. “The arrow is fitted with an explosive. Zei would’ve killed itself and maybe you. But thankfully that didn’t happen and we’re all here now. Talking.” She eyed the candies as she rambled. Something she had learned was that sugar contained inside was extremely addicting, tasty, and very overwhelming. Often times she needed someone to stop her from buying some to just eat on the regular. Thinking it would be rude to say no, she plucked a candy out of Yeyu’s hand. “Thank you.”
Kitty watches Lektra, seeing tge tention in her shoulders and the way her grip tightened on her bow. This was something she recognized. Being overwhelmed and anxious when meeting new people. She herself had felt that way when she first joined the clan. Preferring to stick to the shadows and watch. But this clan, or maybe she could only say this group, had pulled her in and welcomed her. They were chaotic, yeah, but they were loyal and stuck with each other. Kitty reaches out plucks a candy from Yeyu’s hand, and turns to the new comer. She pops the candy in her mouth, slings her backpack around and draws out not just one but four water blasters. All brightly colored and sloshing with water that she had filled them with. She holds them up for everyone to see. “So I brought these to, well, to mess with my comrades here.” She says and her mouth quirks up in a grin. She still plans to spray one or both of them when they were off guard. But this might make for a good ice breaker for the anxious Firrerreo. She holds out a hand with two in it, a red and orange and a purple and lime green water blasters to her. “But, how about a friendly competition?” While holding that one up to Lektra, she holds out her other hand with two more for Yeyu and Scylla. These being a bright blue and yellow, and a pink and purple color.
Scylla glanced down at Lektra’s hand as the Firrerro’s knuckles cracked. It was hard to miss the waves of overwhelm coming off the woman, even out of the water. Brushing back her tendrils, she subtly gestured to her droid, who promptly faded the music to something more beachy and lower in volume. She might need the music playing but she knew people actually preferred the silence. An almost imperceptible shudder ran through the Nautolan. Weird.
“Oh is that all?” Scylla laughed. “He would have been fine. Spend a week on a ship with Kora and you get use to picking up random explosives. Stars know the woman leaves plenty of them lying around where she shouldn’t.” She took another long drink, finishing the first one and discarding the glass in the sand. “And despite the…mishaps of his other pets,” she stared pointedly in the direction of the fallen tree. “Yeyu’s trained the Pikobi decently well.”
As Kitty pulled out the water blasters Scylla’s grin grew larger, “Ooh, now this is some fun I can definitely get behind.” She grabbed the purple one and spun it around her finger once before spraying squarely Yeyu in the face and taking a few of the candies.
Whether is was the warmth of the sun or the promise of good company, Yeyu found himself beaming once more. The twin points of his canines revealed as a gleeful sound escaped. Stashing the candies and hurrying forward to snatch up the blue and yellow water blaster.
“Ah! I haven’t played with one of these since my brothers…were alive.” he stumbles over the last part of the sentence, but manages to continue on, “Should we split up into teams?”
He glances between the faces of the others, looking to gauge their reactions. At his feet the Pikobi hopped up and down excitedly, trilling and lifting his crest in a rapid pattern to express his own playful mood.
Lektra slid her bow into its slot on her quiver after collapsing it. She reached out and took the red water pistol, her heart dropping at Yeyu’s admission. It was something she was sadly familiar with, though she had no idea how to offer any comfort.
“Teams sound good. How shall we choose?”
Kitty watches everyone choose their weapon. Twirling the final pink and purple water blasters around and resting it on her shoulder.
“Hmm, we could flip a coin or draw straws.” She tilts her head eyeing the tree line looking for a suitable target. Then sees several shimmering shells. She walks over, picks up about a dozen and starts arranging them on the charred fallen tree. Then she walks back over to the group, pulls a small tan coin out of her pocket and flips it in the air. “Scylla, heads or tails?”
Scylla watches Kitty in interest as she arranges the shells. Clocking Yeyu’s works and the stumble over them, she briefly turned to him. She remembered stumbling over the words for a while after her parents were killed. The Nautolan never liked when people pointed it out for her, so she stayed silent but gave him a thin smile and a nod. She couldn’t help the small flare of jealousy though, before quashing it down. Not everyone wanted their sibling dead.
Turning back to Kitty, she eyed the coin carefully. “Heads.”
Sidling up to the others, Yeyu took a moment to look over both of the water blasters. With the heat of the sun over head and damp sand beneath bare feet, he was grounded in the present. It was, surprisingly enough, not as difficult to work his way through the thick wave of emotion that came with each little reminder of his siblings. Rather than being swept out to sea in a bittersweet reverie, he cleared his throat and shifted closer to see the results of the coin toss. In the midst of all gathered Zei hopped and wriggled, trilling at anyone that made eye contact. The small creature was clearly convinced the coin that would be flipped was something highly interesting and possibly edible.
Kitty nods to Yeyu. When he mentions his siblings, but says nothing. She too was an orphan of this cruel universe, having once been shipped all over the place just because she was too young to be of much use. But then again, being young had it’s own drawbacks. She didnt dare follow that train of dark thoughts. Instead, she looks at each face with their eyes locked on the coin in her hand. She expertly slids it over and around her fingers, a little tricked she learned along the way.
With a nod at Scylla’s declaration, Her nimble fingers then flick the coin in the air. It flips end over end as it flies high. It comes back down and Kitty swipes it out of the air smacking it down on the back of her hand. She looks around at those gathered and then lifts the top hand to reveal the coin. “Heads. Scylla gets to pick her team mate. And has first shot.” Kitty grins at the Naulotolan, having seen her assessing gaze on the coin. If there was one thing she always kept fair, it was games of chance. She liked control, but the thrill of not knowing how it might turn out was also fun. She never bet on things she couldn’t control, so this was a good way to relax and enjoy the outcome.
Everyone Lektra had ever known or loved had been taken from her growing up, something she learned was not the norm, but it had mostly desensitized her to the fact that it wasn’t a common occurrence. Though she did appreciate having people who could empathize with her from time to time.
She watched the coin toss, quietly waiting to see who she’d be suddenly paired with. So much for a quiet day out.
Scylla crossed her arms as watched the coin flip, and grinned at her success. Putting the water blaster too her chin, she looked at her options for teammates careful. “Hmm very hard choice. I’m thinking I’ll go with Kitty. Never know when you’ll need some stealth options in a water blaster fight.”
Kitty flashes a grin at Scylla. “Alright. We’ll do this in three rounds. Everyone gets a shot at the shells and the team with the most consecutive connecting shots win. First round standing still at 20 paces.” Her grin widens a bit as she continues with the set up for their competition. “The second round you’ll being running from that edge of the trees” she points to the edge of the beach where the trees are fairly thick, but still has a great line of sight to the shells perched on the fallen tree. “And try to shoot the shells as you run to the water over there. "She gestures to where the waves are lapping just behind them. "These two rounds no tricks or interruptions are allowed. For the final round, we’ll do the same but the opposing team gets to shoot the water blasters at the team running and if you get shot twice, you’re down and can’t finish the round.” Kitty confidently walks to the trees and draws a thick line in the sand where she had indicated the starting point. She scoots a few rocks and dead branches to the edge to help make the space clearer. She looks down the beach and spots several larger rocks that would provide cover and another log. Making note that they should offer a good amount of coverage during that final round. She doesn’t say anything and doesn’t draws attention to them. She is smiling as she walks back to her companions, dropping her bag off to the side and out of the way for now. She lifts the blaster to her shoulder and notes the weight. There should be plenty of water for the first two rounds, but definitely will need more by the time they prepare for the first round. “Scylla and I will go first for this round, then Lektra and Yeyu will go. The winner of the first round gets to choose if they want to go first or second in the next round. Sound good? Any questions?” Kitty stands next to Scylla and looks at the others waiting for their responses.
With a short, sharp whistle, Yeyu sent the overly excited Pikobi at their feet away. The blue-grey of his small body retreated in the direction of the charhound. Glancing over his shoulder to make sure the creature fully obeyed the instruction, Yeyu turned his attention to the makeshift game Kitty had laid out for them. With the water blaster cradled in the crook of an arm, he surveyed the area. His free hand coming up to shield mismatched eyes from the glare of insistent sunlight, he mentally tried to make note of the rules and arrangements. Though if he was honest, he was just excited to have an excuse to shoot Scylla with a water blaster. He’d been growing rather fond of trying to appear innocent while getting a rise from her. It was most amusing, albeit likely risky for his health.
“Yes of course, by all means go first.” He casually shifted his weight and let his hand settle on the blaster, squeezing subtly. Water squirted out at Scylla and he batted his eye lashes, “Oops!”
