Maeva had arrived and started to walk past the agent’s desks. It made sense why they had chosen her but she wasn’t sure if she can meet their expectations. Yet, she wanted to help. And Narman was right, her past before the military and help her with this.
She was wearing her black scrubs with her Gooi-Moord id clasped at the chest pocket. She had a lace collar and a separated chain necklace with the end item being hidden underneath the scrubs. Her hair was up in a bun. She had worn this appearance many times when she needed to discuss with the professionals about cases here before. It wasn’t long before she heard the buzz and got up.
She rapped on the door, made sure her body was where he can peer through the blinds. She heard him say ‘Come in,“ She opened the door and stepped in, made sure to close the door behind her.
"Morning, Director Farrow.” She quickly glanced around the office. He was like her. Not many personal items lingering around. Though she had a few photos while he did not. Her eyes went to the mug that didn’t seem to really fit, so maybe a gift?
Maeva stood before the chair and did not sit down. He hasn’t given her order to. Her datapad rested against her side as her grip maintained on it, “it’s nice to meet you.”
“You may sit.” Cole gestured a hand toward the chair, finishing on his tablet and placing it aside before finally looking at her. He made eye contact first, then glanced over the scrubs. Noting her ID, her form, how she held her data pad. They would be working together and while he had recieved the young woman’s file, they weren’t the be all and end all of anyone.
The mug had a cheesy sunrise on it, with the words ‘Don’t talk to me before this is empty’ stamped across it. It was in fact empty.
“Magistrate Maeva. It’s good to meet you as well.” He maintained a straight posture, relaxed but not casual. But frack, what was he supposed to say here? He’d been pondering it since the meeting was arranged for the pair to… meet. They needed to know each other’s faces for safety but other than that… “I don’t believe I have anything to brief you on. My understanding is that your work is to be adjacent to OSI, able to overlap but parallel on the standard day.”
Maeva blinked.
Narman had more to say. She thought Farrow would had a lot more to say. Saftey. Rules. Regulations. All that stuff.
“I-” She started and then closed her mouth. Did they really believe she was capable for this mission? Sure, she had history, and military background. Though her history would had made it a bit questionable when Narman pointed out her once issues with authority figures.
Not that it was still a bit of a problem.
“Yea- Yes, sir,” Maeva quickly corrected.
“If it’s to protect myself and to maintain my undercover status, how far in my role am I allowed to play?”
Maeva nodded, “Vice Chancellor Losa did inform me of past alias and suggested I take one of them. I decided on Amethyst.” It was a good thing she had already studied up on the other undercover agents that she was going to be with.
It was a bit unnerving knowing they were all older and more experienced than her… but a few of them didn’t have experience of the street smarts like she did. It was either to learn the streets or die.
“As for what I requested earlier, I met more so for the criminals, not the agents.”
Amethyst. Noted. Also to keep an eye on any of Losa’s other aliases… Not that he wasn’t.
He glanced to the door, shifting in his seat. She still seemed nervous. But then again she was likely the youngest person in this office.
Oh… the criminals. He was quiet for a moment, considering.
“Whatever you deem necessary. As long as you can justify why it became necessary, and that you took measures to prevent that situation occurring. You are trusted to make the best calls you can.”
Cole considered his own words for a moment. And then her nervousness again. That… was a lot of pressure. Maybe…
“If theres any hypotheticals you want to run throguh we can. You also have access to our resources, as you need them. While most decisions will need to be made in the moment, there’s plenty that can be done to prepare you.”
They… trusted her?
Maeva didn’t know how to feel about this. Did they read her entire life story-
Of course they did. Narman called her out the moment she tried something. And the patient he had to have when she got a bit snarky for a second.
She cleared her throat.
“I guess… I’m just surprised on the … faith? the three of you have on me. I just got hired to work at Gooi-Moord and the next thing I know I’m being entasked. I can handle it, my past will help me with that. It takes a bit of adjusting because save for my squad from the military, not many have faith in me.” She was mentally surprised with how much she revealed to a stranger.
Maeva didn’t show it as she nodded. “No, I understood, do all I can not to do the crime but do the crime if it means protection.”
Cole watched her for a moment, considering Maeva over and then nodded.
“Good.” He wasn’t really sure what else to bring up. She still seemed a bit nervous. “We trust you because we’ve seen your file. You have kist to learn still sure, but sometimes new eyes are the best. The military can-”
He paused, catching the emotive response before it fully escaped. He shook his head, “We take care of our own here. OSI at the very least, which while you aren’t part of you have connections here. As I said, they’re available to you.”
Maeva raised her eyebrow at his choice of language.
“Pardon me, but have you met Vice Chancellor Losa, yet?”
“Briefly.” Cole answered, his expression unchanging. “Why?”
“Did he dislike your choice of words as well?” Maeva slightly teased though she realized maybe she was pushing it pass the professionalism.
Narman was extremely professional.
Farrow seemed less so.
She cleared her throat as she got up, with her datapad in her hand. “Thank you for the reassurance and the information, Director Farrow.”
Cole blinked, having to rewind mentally for what she was referring too. Swearing? Oh frack, was Losa… Sigh. Noted. He allowed himself a small scoff, a tiny show of human emotion, at Maeva’s teasing. “I didn’t find out. Good to know, however.”
Cole stood this time as well, consciously placing his weight on his healthy leg. Most days were fine at this point, but if he overdid it… The stump of his leg got sore in the prosthetic. Unfortunately, he’d overdone it the previous day.
He offered his hand to shake, “It was good to meet you officially, Maeva.”
“Maybe it was just me then…” The Evereni sounded amused. She now wondered if he was more picky towards her than Farrow cause of their ranking or something else?
Maeva reached out and grasped his hand into a shake, “Likewise. Wish me luck.”
“I didn’t give him the oppurtuntiy to inform me that he minds swearing.” Cole corrected, holding the shake for the Correct Amount of Time before releasing and returning to a neutral pose.
“Try to not need luck in the first place.”
He offered a smile. It wasn’t very genuine but he it was as much as he could muster. Her words were an echo of too many others. Others who didn’t get lucky.
Maeva had recognized that smile.
She gave the same smile in return. She had found out from Losa recently to how many bodies that was on her slab belonged to the Kriz Syndicate.
It wasn’t going to be an easy mission, but with her experience, advantage of her job to get connections, and support, she should be okay.
Maybe.
